My lute plans and instructional DVDs arrived in the mail yesterday from David Van Edwards.

First step is finding a few bits of wood for the job.

Yeah youre probably right there Seb....might end up going to my grave with the DVDs.

Still...the boss is off to Japan on monday and Im not due back at work till mid June. Its also pissing with rain here in the Adelaide Hills so domestics and mountain bike riding are off the agenda.

Thanks for the link to DW's lute build.......think Ill watch Dave build his beast first before starting on mine. Im already seeing a few little differences between Dave's building method and David Van Edwards'.

If you don't already have it, Robert Lundberg's book on lute building (published by the GAL) would undoubtedly be useful. It was originally published over a couple of years (or more) in American Lutherie and stands out as incredibly well researched and knowledgeable.

Thanks Graham...Ive got Lundbergs book already as well as most of the other GAL publications.

I love Dave's skilfull use of the wooden toilet seat on his bowl mould.

That's to help control bowl movements

You'll have great fun making a lute - and you'll probably need a new swear box as well, but there are lots of Old English words to fit the bill . I figured that if I'm going to call myself a luthier then sooner or later I'd have to make a "luth" and having Colin as teacher and mentor is as good as it gets.

Okay so first thing I have to do is work out how to swipe the seat off the dunny without the boss noticing. Mmmmmm...this lute build is going to be a bit more tricky than I thought.

First lute build stopped in it's tracks before it starts, unless you "borrow" it while the boss's is away then put it back on before she gets back

Might have a job explaining any glue or screw holes though.

I was in the local music store yesterday, and the oddest thing happened. Someone got a demo of a banjo, and after hearing it, they decided to buy it.

Well tonight I spent 3 hours tracing the form plan onto tracing paper for transfer onto MDF. This is definitely going to be a long term project. Might aim to have it finished in time for my funeral.

Weekend spent cutting out parts for the body mold.....didnt go very well and Ive trashed same. Van Andrews instructs to transfer direct from ploan to tracing paper and then to the MDF....I found too much dimensional error creeping in during the process ending up in matching mould ribs not being same dimensions. Version 2 will be made up using cardboard patterns. Ill use the same pattern inverted for each set of mold ribs. This is going to be a looooong and at times frustrating project...just like Dave White said.

I imagine most people would be sitting wishing they were dead as well if they heard me playing a lute. I think ill hire Karamazov to play at my funeral.

Have you thought of going to a copy place and just getting a couple copies of the plans and slicing them up for your patterns?
