Dent and hole on my guitar.

Post by JJ model » Fri Feb 20, 2009 11:13 am

Hi Friends of ANZLF,
Just completed an OM with lots of runouts Sitka and Monkeypod B&S.
Binding is Malaysian Blackwood.
Fortunately it sounded much more better than it looks.
Thanks for looking.
Jeff

Nice, I like the soft edge for your right arm. Very stylish bridge and rosette too.

Um, welcome Jeff, and that "lots of runouts" top looks like nice bearclaw Sitka to me, and I don't see any runout (dark/light halves) in this particular photo.

Glad it sounds better that it looks, because that means it sounds very good!

Guys, don't be fooled 8) Jeff Young is a spectacular guitar maker (as you can see). He's also very modest too boot :D

The master of monkey pod. Yup, that's him. And that there monkey pod is outstanding!

Jeff, your guitars are simply amazing. I love it when they just show up like this.

Cheers

Jeff,

Beautiful, as usual. You have an excellent sense of the asthetic - great taste.

If it sounds better than it looks, I'd bet it sounds awesome.

Gotta get me some of that monkey pod!

Hi Jeff
Looks like a guitar you just want to pick up and play, would love to hear a sound file.

Funny how things change, the old guy I worked with twenty odd years ago would have used what we call bearclaw as fuel in the slow burner of the still.

Jeff mate,

If the sound of that guitar is better than it's looks then it must be one of the best sounding guitars ever made!

Any chance of some photos of the inlay work on the fretboard?

Cheers Martin

Hi Folks,
Thank You for all your nice comments.
I hope all of us get some inspiration to expand the horizon of wood and ideas in making more beautiful guitars. i believe there are no bad wood if we uses them properly.

Hi Martin, The inlay is a free form of abalone strips, its easier to inlay a crooked line than a straight one!

Hi Dennis, I hope this photo is much clearer to see those 'defects' on the top.

Hi Jim, You are right man, the laksa here are excellent! I'm not quite sure my guitar's taste anywhere close , maybe I'll try taking a bite and see.

I think monkeypod is the right way to go guys!

Beautiful work as always Jeffrey.

I love the way the fingerboard inlay transitions into the rosette.

Hey Jeff,

Good to see you drop in again, it's always a pleasure to see your wonderful work. As usual this is a stunning guitar and it has some real eye candy features. As Bob pointed out the transition of the fretboard inlay into that of the rosette is very stylish, but another thing that caught my eye is the brass bridge pins. Do you think they add anything tonally or did you just decide that you like the colour?

Cheers

Kim

Hi Guys, Thank you ,thank you, thank you all! it makes my face more red ( up to my ears!)...

my point is to share we can all make beautiful guitars no need to use the traditional wood, give those wood a break! there are plenty of wood behind our house that can be more useful.

Hi Hesh buddy, good to hear from you! its not a she, I didn't add any lipstick colour on the headface...

Yes, those pins are custom made, people always think that it will sound brassy....brass are naturally related to sound. I made those pins less massive comparable to those fosillised ivory, its all about density of the pins. It brings out the clarity and sustain and power too.

Hey Jeff OK it's not a she but you can't blame a guy for trying..... :D

I agree with you about the pins being about density. I think that the folks who notice a difference when adding the commercial brass pins are really hearing what more mass can do for perhaps an overbuilt guitar. Since you have reduced the mass and like the results this is an alternative that I never thought of and it makes sense that they would work on a guitar that is not over braced.

Nice work!

Thanks Hesh.
I think the exceptance of brass pins are like given a pound of cotton and a pound of iron , which is the heavier thing ?. Similary to traditional wood, some say rosewood still sound better than others.
How's your monkeypod guitar coming along or its still tied up in the cage?

Absolutely beautiful Jeff. Great combinations of timbers used, I love the bridge shape and the ecentric rosette. There's just too many features to mention them all. I must find out how those round arm rest edges are done too, they're a great feature.
