Truss Rod Rescue Kit

Post by StimpyRV » Wed Jan 14, 2009 9:01 pm

Hello. Just wondering what other alternatives there are out there to fix a stripped truss rod.
I see Stew Mac has this:

But it's sooooo expensive!
Does anyone out there have a cheaper solution?
Thanks.

What type of rod? rear mounted or front mounted. Are you certain it is the rod not the nut etc.

rod or nut

It's a fender with the philips head down at the body end.

I 90% sure, as I took the nut out and tried it on another neck and it worked all right. Tried another nut on the stuff neck and it doesn't do anything.

I really don't want to remove the fingerboard, dig out the old rod etc etc etc.

Thanks.

It's front mounted under the fingerboard. I guess I could always turn it into a rear mounted neck as an option which will save mucking around with the fingerboard.

I would suggest that you are lucky it is front mounted and the way to go about it is to remove the fret board and repair the rod outside the neck.

Good luck

In the past I have got around this problem, cant remember the guitars tho, with a dremal and a dental burr. I have them burrs with a long shaft and use a flexible drive. I carefully took wood away from around the rod in the rod cavity exposing new thread. I would assess this method depending on the guitar. You could try an old rod nut and burr up the end with a centerpunch and it may cut a new flat surface for the washer to seat up against. Having thought about this whilst writing I think I have another way Hmmm I'll go and experiment I've got heaps of old necks, "I'll be back" [don't hold your breath tho] Good luck.

Thanks Taff. In my relentless search for a solution I stumbled on this:
http://www.guitarrepairshop.com/repairtrussrod.html
I been able to remove the rod exactly the way it was describe in the article. Now I need to find a replacement Truss Rod. Might have to make my own. With this method I will need to attach the anchor in vitro so to speak. Any suggestions on how to fix the anchor? Thanks.
