Cocobolo / Engelmann Fingerstyle Pics

G'day, mates, here's a recent guitar that you might enjoy viewing.
The back/sides are Cocobolo, the top is Engelmann spruce.
Center lam in the mahognay neck is also Cocobolo.
Bindings are dark Brazilian rosewood, bridge is African blackwood.
Green heart ab. for purflings and rosette.
Sunburst was done at Colin's insistence!

Oooowweeee! Now that is one sweet little black and bling thing Steve, very tasty indeed just wish the images were more abundant and a tad larger so we could have a real good look. Thanks for posting yet another great Kinnaird guitar.

Yeah, Bob, I'm a Gibson burst kinda guy too.
In fact, I sent the body off to Tony w/ a Gibson poster enclosed, showing the very burst I wanted. He done good!
Martin, it almost broke (burst?) my heart to do this top this way.
It was almost snow white, and really pretty.
But while prepping the top w/ final sanding, this sap pocket comes up outta nowhere, w/ no warning. Really glaring against the light top.
So we decided to hide it in a burst.
However, when it came back from Tony, I thought that I may have to do more of these. There is a richness about it that I find appealing.

I'd not thought about doing a dark burst like that to hide a flaw in a top. It's a terrific fix, and I think makes this instrument look better than with a snow white top. The pearl really comes to life against the dark background.

Allen, you're right...a burst makes abalone just pop. And if you ever wondered what the factories do with tops that are less than perfect, well now you know one reason why there are so many bursts out there!

Craig, you're praise is praise indeed.

Alan, I've found Cocobolo to rival Brazilian. It's heavier, and oilier, but besides those factors it's just dynamite for tone. This guitar sounds wonderful, and though the top is the main contributor, the Cocobolo is kicking in something magical.
(Or as Brad G. would say, it sounds "nice". He's right, too!)

Steve,

Another fine instrument from you - nice wood combinations and appointments. Although I'm not a fan of sunbursts, my appreciation that you stuck with a great sounding piece of tonewood rather than consign it to the furnace (or whatever) because of a perceived beauty flaw more than overcomes this - minus fifty points and plus two hundred for Kinnaird-dore as Dumbledore might have said

I'm glad that you rate the sound of Cocobolo as I'm currently making a Lutz/Cocobolo Grand Concert guitar for someone that most of you know. It also has a theme of making the most of wood, and as it's a leftie, I need to "vicariously" live through the sound of Cocobolo.

Nice one again - keep them coming!!

Steve, I showed Fran this thread and she agree. The burst was very nicely handled. She was able to peg why it didn't bother me. "Oh, I like that one. It doesn't have any of that nasty orange in it. It makes the rosette stand out without getting into your face."

Two thumbs up from our corner of the world.

Dave, don't forget that w/ Cocobolo, one needs to use Douglas Fir braces.
That's a given of course, unless you use your "X" on the back. Then, if I remember correctly, one uses Adirondack braces cut on the slab.

Now, don't keep us in suspense, just whom are you building a guitar for?

ETA is probably around the end of November all going well.

This is a wonderful opportunity to own one of Dave's instruments. I have been wanting one for a long time- before Cheltenham in 2007, and playing them for real confirmed how bloody good and inspiring these instruments are..

That set of Coco was my set- and I was reserving it for a more skilled time. However, I'll never do justice to it as Dave has...

Am I excited? You bet!!!
