From Stick Dulcimer to Stick Bass, a more challenging build

Post by Taffy Evans » Sat Sep 27, 2008 3:01 pm

Here are some pictures of an electric bass I built not so long ago, a 5 string Stick Bass. It’s of course a one piece solid neck/body of NG rosewood with a Jarrah fingerboard and bridge assembly.

The piezo pickup is mounted under the timber [Maple] saddle on the bridge. I could not get a 5 string piezo bridge so had to convert a standard bridge. Having the timber insert in the bridge with an Maple saddle gave a more mellow sound than when using the metal saddles that come with the bridge, and sets it apart from a regular electric bass. The sound is not true acoustic, but is closer to a standup bass than the owner’s regular electric bass.

It has its own stand [modified cymbal stand] and it all packs into a regular bass case that I modified the inside of.

I really like that one Taffy. About 6 months ago now a fellow cornered me in a local music shop asking me to do some paint touch up on his electric base. I had never seen one before, and I was kinda intrigued by it. His was just a lump of wood that had a very bad black lacquer paint job on it. Yours is a much more attractive instrument.
