Ladder Purfling

Post by Jack1 » Fri Dec 06, 2024 3:09 pm

Looking for a small amount of a particular design and colour of binding edge or rosette ladder purfling. I made a rosette for a classical soundboard a while back thinking I could source more of this purfling and so far no luck.

So if you have or know of someone that may have the matching purfling (in the attached photo) to go with edge binding the top of one guitar foe sale, that would be wonderful.

Thank you, regards John K

Hi Jack
Welcome to ANZLF.

Gurian Instruments is always a good place to look.
This one looks pretty close

Thanks Mark, much appreciated. I did look at Gurian some time back, but at the time they didn't seem to have stock of this one and was not sure if it was designed as being flexible enough for edge binding. From the dimensions of 2.6mm wide x 2.2mm deep it seems thick/deep enough to be flexible I guess. They are not cheap, but I assume it is well made. Cheers John.

If it is flexible enough to do the inner ring of the rosette is should bend around the edge of the body without difficulty, even a cutaway. Gurian stuff has a good reputation for quality. Quite a lot of the purfling material that you see for sale on Stew-Mac or other sellers is actually sourced from Gurian.

Yes, I tend to agree with you Mark, it appears that this Gurian purfling is very close to the one I have used that I bought (a very small amount) from Gerard Gilet some years ago. Although it is a little wider and deeper then the one I used, and that was my only concern. There was the same pattern and colour that I found on ebay, but it was less then 1mm thick marquetry, designed for back strip (not flexible).
Thanks again for the referral, you have been very helpful, and much appreciated. Regards John.

I just notice when trying to place an order they indicate that they won't or can't ship to my address in Sydney. Not sure why?

That is annoying! Might be worth an email or phone call enquiry? If they still won't ship overseas you can use a parcel forwarding service like Shipito - or get it sent to your cousin Randy in Minneapolis.

What was cost of your order?
