laminated plates
Just in case of people are under the misconception that i am producing my own laminated plates i have to say,,,, No i am not set up for that,,, Yet! As most will already know i usually carve my own plates from solid stock,, but if i have the need for a laminated set i buy them in from the U.S. But ,,, i have been accumulating the gear i'll need to make my own laminated tops of sorts,,, Double Top Archtops using the fabled Nomex, so when i get some time,,, don't know when that's gonna be,,, i'll get it on the go and you'll be the first ones to hear about it,, success or failure.. Watch this space

Re: laminated plates
What thickness are you going to make the plates should be interesting the Nomex is a pretty cool stuff sound will be different for an archtop may be better

John ,of way too many things to do.
Re: laminated plates
What do you need to be able to take that next step to make your own, I would be guessing just a vacuum pump and frame.
I have made small laminated plates before, nothing his size but, I actually have 200, 0.8mm flame maple book matched veneer sheets, I was going to laminate them myself to make the top and back for a Benedetto styled archtop.

Re: laminated plates
Steve, got the pump ex Martin, got all the fittings ex Bob just need to build a tank and a mould/ frame. Plan on making my own veneers from back and front sets, bringm down to 1 mm, one inner one outer+ 3mm Nomex hey presto a 5mm plate.
Sounds straight forward but I'll bet I come across a snag or three.

Re: laminated plates
Cool, I will let you know how mine goes then, I will cnc carve a mold plate, then cross laminate 6 sheets of flame maple onto that shape, just not to sure yet whether I am going to heat them / soak them or just vacuum pull them down (each layer)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as mentioned I have made laminations before but not archtop shaped laminations

Re: laminated plates
Rod, you may have problem with the Nomex as it'll really only flex in one direction. An Archtop may have gentle enough curvature that you'll get away with it using 3mm thick core. But, there's a product called "flex core" which is designed to flex in both directions. It has a different cell geometry. It may be difficult to get, but it's out there and I've been wrong before.

Re: laminated plates
Rod, I have no personal experience with Nomex, I looked into it a while back and decided it was not for me.
What are you expecting to achieve from laminating in Nomex?
As far as I could tell it is basically not a really stiff material just providing a lightweight separation layer so that you can end up with a panel of say 3mm thickness with the mass of a 2.2mm panel.
I could forsee problems of deformation from tailpiece loads etc

Re: laminated plates
Well Jeff it's more a case of I want to be able to produce my own laminated plates and I've seen a YouTube video of this process and the finished product in the instrument, looks like it might be ok but I won't really know until I have a go myself.
So when I get a chance I'll give it a go and see for myself.
Cheers

Re: laminated plates
Not questioning the idea of laminating your own plates Rod, Just wheter the use of nomex is worth it.

Re: laminated plates
I'm hearing you Jeff, I'm not going to stake the family fortune on an instant success but I like the idea of the Nomex providing a light top so I think I'll give it a go and see what the results are, if it doesn't work out I'll give it a rethink.
