pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!
No sorry it hasn't happened yet. but wouldn't it be good if they did carry it?
I've been sending requests for them to add it to their stock lines. I'm suggesting that you guys hop onto their facebook page or website and do likewise.
I just put a lot of money on one from Stewmac. Postage to Oz costs way more than the cost of the vise!!

I got lucky a few years back when Lee Valley stuffed up their pricing on some pattern vices. To their credit they honoured the advertised price and shipped the goods.

It is a pretty heavy Item by the look of it you'd want a container full to make it worth while ,I could make one easy enough it does not need to hold the keel of a tall ship I guess.

well that's why I just think Carbatec should carry it. they have Taiwanese suppliers I'm sure. they could just put a hundred or so in their next shipment of heavy steel things. And I'm sure they'd sell. how many instrument makers are there here? must be hundreds.
I made one, it was ok, but nothing nearly as good as a real one. so I finally cracked and bought one from SM. it is so useful.
thewoodworks.com.au is only marginally cheaper than the Stewmac one after shipping. in fact with local shipping cost probably more.
in the US they sell for around $135USD. and that's imported from Asia.

Stewmac say that they have modified their vise with bearings and a faster pitch screw. The other site in my post doesn't have any info in their description. -Ross

I have one of these green ones. Got a family member who imports cars to bring it back for me for around $150. I couldn't do without it now that I have it.blackalex1952 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 24, 2017 2:44 pmThese guys have one...$346 - scroll down on the page.

It doesn't have a bearing and the fancy faster pitch screw.....and the official Stewmac Communist paint job...but I'm happy with the green vise I've got.blackalex1952 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 25, 2017 12:21 pmI have one of these green ones.Does the ghreen one have the mods?Stewmac say that they have modified their vise with bearings and a faster pitch screw

True if it works it's a good one ,the thing is a container is 5 k to ship so all the gear in it after Import duties has to be cheap as chips for the Importers I guess .I would like to make one out of Aluminium ect that would be a lot lighter .

Carbatec and the other importers already have containers full of ironwork coming regularly. all they need to do is put in a bunch of these with their next shipment!
Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!
Yes they do
they also want at the very least 200 percent profit

Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!
if an american retailer can import them from china or taiwan and sell for USD$130 and still make a 200% profit, then surely an aussie retailer can do the same :-/
Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!
Wouldn't work in South Australia...the State Government slaps taxes on any company making huge profits.

Seriously though Carbatec or someone else would be onto a winner if they imported a container load of these vices at a decent price.

A buying group on this website perhaps? Maybe someone knows an importer who would include goods in a container shipment and is sympathetic to a luthier's budget. Then I might be dreaming as usual...-Ross

Don't know what happened there...it was all looking rosey and then the original poster stopped posting....would have been nice if he'd given us a reason or at least said goodbye.Bruce McC wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2017 9:06 amHi Ross

Hi Guys,
I also have the green pattern makers vise, but if I had of come across the parrot vise first, that would have been my preference to buy...why?...because it can be used in the vertical & horizontal positions & swivelled to any degree.
Of course, horses for courses.

Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!
The parrot vise is a much smaller unit. They do not cover the same scope of work holding......I have both.
Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!
Ditto. The pattern makers vice can hold a guitar by it's neck....not something I'd do with the parrot vice. The pattern makers rotating jaws also allow odd shaped objects to be held securely....again not something easily done with the parrot vice.

What's even better is the ability of the pattern makers vice to hold a human head...perfect for disciplining an errant child.

Well...
Hey presto!
https://www.carbatec.com.au/clamping-vi ... hiers-vise
In stock now. Merry Christmas.
*Disclaimer: (or is that spoiler alert?!) For those that don't know, I am working for Carbatec again and in a position to make this happen. It was actually in process during this discussion, but I did not want to say anything until it was a done deal and on the shelves.
Cheers,
Jeremy.
