Re: Chinese guitar factory
Interesting videos.
A custom built guitar from this factory came in for repair a few weeks back. It was a baritone tuned arch top with the bottom two stings offset at the nut and saddle by 10mm to the frets and fretless. The owner plays upright sounding bass lines on the fretless strings together with chords and melody on the fretted strings. It has potential for good tone and was well built just a bit rough in the finish (tobacco burst) and the fit up. With quality solid woods heaps of custom inlay and the custom fretless / off set fretboard and bridge it cost $1400.
It's a tough world for an Aussie builder.
Garry.

And going to keep getting tougher, as our desired wages grow and our demand for cheaper made products continues.
We want wages of 30 plus an hr, china, a couple of dollars for the day will be fine.
Its like chalk and cheese

It all boils down to whether or not the average Australian is prepared to lower their living standards to the same as the average Chinese....one lof the great marvels of the great global economy.simso wrote:

Re: Chinese guitar factory
Our wages don't fit our cost of living Steve,I think about firing a machine up to make a part or If I can do it by hand cost is a killer ,education of your our Aussie buyers on a handcrafted instrument is the key and a constant battle.

John ,of way too many things to do.

Another thing that astounds me is people's negatively of the work produced, the work coming from China these days is extremely good, and if you take into consideration the workmanship and work ethics of the employees, we don't stand a chance any more on the build fronts of commercial enterprises
Hobby builders might get away with it, with some fancy advertising and wheeling and dealing, but I don't know how maton and Coke Clarke can still do it

Re: Chinese guitar factory
The cheap labour won't last for ever. The cycle's the same.....cheap labour and booming labour intensive industries....eventually the workers start wanting a better standard of living...wages go up....the companies have to find another developing country with dirt poor workers prepared to work for a pittance.simso wrote:Another thing that astounds me is people's negatively of the work produced, the work coming from China these days is extremely good, and if you take into consideration the workmanship and work ethics of the employees, we don't stand a chance any more on the build fronts of commercial enterprises

By the time you factor in the need to save away part of your earnings to allow you to have a comfortable retirement the picture becomes a bit different.routout wrote:Our wages don't fit our cost of living Steve
