Steve Gilchrist & Mike Compton on RN (30 August 08)

Folks,

John, one of our members from Great Southern Lutherie, was kind enough to let us know in his attached post, about an up coming treat featuring Mike Compton and Steve Gilchrist on ABC Radio National. As the show is not schedule until Saturday 30 August 5.05pm with a repeat on Friday 5 September 3.05pm ... I thought it would be a good idea to leave a sticky up until then as a reminder.

But hey, don't be put off if you are outside of Australia and can't tune the radio in to ABC. You can still listen to the show on-line and also, while at the site, you can catch up on some of the other great stuff that Into the Music has been airing each week including the most excellent "Playmakers" show of a few weeks back that featured the Great Southern Lutherie hosted gathering of instrument builders in Albany WA.

G'day All

I've received early notification from Robyn Johnston of Radio National's 'Into the Music' fame re the 2nd radio program to arise out of the Playmakers event held here in Albany in February '08, titled "A Lonesome Powerful Sound."

We’ll hear Mike Compton and Steve Gilchrist together on stage - Gilchrist mandolins in hand, playing a few tunes and sharing a relaxed conversation about music, Bill Monroe, Lloyd Loar and of course - mandolins.

Mike Compton is a superb mandolinist in bluegrass and old-time music, a member of the acclaimed Nashville Bluegrass Band and renowned for his playing on the soundtrack of O Brother Where Art Thou. Back in 1979 he became Australian luthier Steve Gilchrist’s first American customer.

Compton is regarded as the leading interpreter of the style of the father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. He knew Monroe well and was his mandolin duet partner on what’s thought to be Monroe’s last recording. Steve Gilchrist, on the other hand, has a mentor he never met: Lloyd Loar was an acoustical engineer who designed and made instruments for the Gibson company in the early twentieth century.

Into the Music ... Saturday 30 August 5.05pm and repeated Friday 5 September 3.05pm ... ABC Radio National.

btw - Playmakers 2009 is scheduled for the weekend of February 27th in Albany WA; will keep you posted re the line-up of luthiers attending - have heard Greg Smallman is keen.

Wow,

I urge anyone here who hasn't heard this yet to give it a whirl ( with headphones; those little mandos barking thru computer speakers just don't do themselves justice )

I saw Compton in Melbourne 3 years ago playing to an audience of maybe 70-80 people ( there was one microphone up there, but he didn't need it )
The whole gig was a bit of a eulogy to John Hartford, who is now of course in fiddle heaven )just as this one is a tribute to the combined legacies of Loar and Monroe.

The other delight for me was to hear 2 articulate guys talking about our favourite subject ( err ... instruments that is ) in the context of history, with just enough tech talk about soundholes and such to keep things interesting.

It was even worth the 1/2 hour of dicking around with the ABC's audio streaming system to get it working.

Thanks Kim, and to all who tuned in to the broadcast, which continues to live on (with image gallery) via streaming at this link. I'd also like to acknowledge the brilliance of Robyn Johnston and sound engineer David LeMay from ABC's Radio National who recorded over 70 hours of audio at Playmakers '08, and who had the arduous task of editing it down to two superb 'Into the Music' presentations.

For your diaries ... Playmakers 2009 will happen in Albany on the south coast of Western Australia over the weekend of February 27-29. When the line-up is officially released by the Perth International Arts Festival in November I'll certainly post the info to this forum. As a taster - classical guitar making/playing, and similarly hawaiian ukes, will be on the program.
