ziricote gluing HELP
ziricote gluing HELP
Hey guys,
just wondering if there is any sort of special gluing technique i have to use when gluing ziricote? the last fretboard i glued on was ziricote and i used titebond original. I have just have to remove it (because of silly mistakes while carving the neck) and it popped off quite easily and cleanly. I am about to re glue it to a new neck but I wanted to check if titebond is good enough.
i know with cocobolo you have to use epoxy. Is ziricote the same?

Re: ziricote gluing HELP
I've used Ziricote several times and just used F9 yellow glue as normal, so Titebond will work no problem.
Re: ziricote gluing HELP
Wiping with solvent before gluing is not universally accepted.
Many feel that it just mobilises the oils in the timber rather than removing them.
Personally, I just scrape immediately before gluing to have a fresh surface with a lot of surface energy and apply glue or epoxy to both surfaces.

Re: ziricote gluing HELP
For oily woods like Cocobolo and Zircote I've used Titebond. Only joint that's failed has been one I wiped with acetone as per recommendation. Turns out that just as Jeff said, oils get pulled out and go everywhere. Now it's just a clean scrape just prior to glueing.
Re: ziricote gluing HELP
I do not recommend using titebond with Cocobolo. It's so oily that its virtually waterproof. It's too much of a gamble, thus anytime I use Coco I use epoxy.
Ziricote, Bocote and similar are nowhere near as oily as Coco and can be treated as per the norm.
