Filling up chip outs...

Post by slowlearner » Thu Dec 12, 2013 10:02 am

Hi guys, I figured you know how to cover up... I mean "fix this".

When I was originally cutting out this electronics cover from the back of the bass, the bandsaw ripped out bits on the end of the grain. I think the timber is mango. Basically I'm looking for a mostly invisible way to fill and match the filling to the surround timber on the back of the bass.

What glue to use? How to do it?

Run an inlay along the join? Thinking a bit outside the square here.....you're trying to hide the join but the screws are a dead giveaway that it's an electrics cover so why hide it?

I'm not trying to hide the join, just the bits I need to fill. I guess I could put some black laminate along the edges right?

Black against black would work.

Ok, how do you mean "black against black"?

black against black along the join. I'd just use some plain black purfling.....I'd be keeping the inlay as subtle as possible. Id also consider continuing the inlay all the way around the cover...just my thoughts. Draw it out on paper and see how it looks.

If they are not too deep (1mm?) you could laminate some more material on the back and then sand the face down to eliminate the chips,

+1 on this suggestion.
"Jesus Loves You."
Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.
