Grafted Walnut Build
Now that I have cleaned up my workshop I have some space to actually do some lutherie. I received and processed some grafted Walnut from north eastern Victoria over 12 months ago and thought I may as well do a Swiss spruce/Grafted walnut 000 for starters. I have placed the graft at the waste as it seem like an appropriate position.
The graft line on this walnut is quite intriguing.
Really close. Actual size is about 60mm x 50mm

G'day Tim ,
Isn't that curious . The timber fibres continue through unbroken and yet it's two different species or at least two separate trees by genetics . I like .

There is certainly a bit of wow! factor in that back Tim. I reckon most wood nuts wood look twice with a curious expression on their face at that one. Is it just the photo or is there only figure in the root stock and no figure in the other bit?

Hi Jim,
There are quite a few variations. The posted set stops the figure at the waste.

Hi Tim
I saw the grafted walnut for sale on your website, and was waiting for someone to build something - it will be interesting I reckon.

Just a few images of the grafted walnut guitar after a coating of Minwax. Soundboard not yet coated. Bindings are a dark indian rosewood.

Re: Grafted Walnut Build
Hi Col,
The light areas are predominantly sapwood. The walnut is also a graft between English and a hybrid called Paradox. I was going to use the other heartwood section of the set but it tended toward a back sawn cut. I have however found that the walnut is quite stable and could have used more of the true wood. Interestingly the side material has knot in one section which remained intact and sound throughout the bending process.
regards
Tim

Re: Grafted Walnut Build
That looks gorgeous Tim. The waist is the perfect location for the graft line.
