Here's footage of one of the larger buildings in the Christchurch CBD district coming down in the 'proper' way, many have been "De-Constructed" which has taken an age so as a result, the CBD is still a no go zone 18 months after the event. Martin may recognise it as the Radio Network house in Worcester Street. It used to surrounded by other building's so it gives you some idea of the amount of 'de-construction' that's been going on here. I drove as close as I could get to the centre of town the other day & I must say, without the familiar buildings around to reference off, I almost got lost! I had to really think hard of where I was and where abouts my turn off was.

80% of buildings now gone from the CBD......they might as well blow the rest up and start with a clean slate.

I find it really hard going back to Christchurch.....I didnt think that buildings were a large part of the character of the city...but they are. It might sound absurd but one building I really miss is the old gas works that used to dominate the landscape by the Barbadoes St railway overbridge. Ditto for the original Railway Station...man they really stuffed up with the new station...its pathetic.

Ah the glassed in lean to! Yes hardly an inspiring piece of architecture for overseas guests hoping on the trans alpine or the railcar. Original is also coming down now, gonna be a whole new skyline in ten years time, none of it over 7 storeys.

Ive always thought that, once they started listing what had to come down and what had already fallen over, why mess around?! May as well start fresh, only trouble is a few of the buildings they're going to replace...I've seen the insurance company's idea of 'replacement' Square, slab sided, featureless buildings with a bit of glass chucked in to break up the look of solid concrete.  "Anybody order a generic city?"
