Heads Up for a couple of bargains on Ebay.

Post by woodrat » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:55 pm

Hi Everyone...I thought that I would give a heads up to a couple of Durden machines on Ebay at the moment. For someone with out a table saw this could interest them. They are old Aussie made machinery and they seem to go fairly cheaply when they come up. One is in Hunters Hill Sydney and the other out near Canberra.
Anyway anyone who may be on the lookout for a nice small saw at the right price it could be for them.
Things you could do with one involving lutherie. Fret slotting, tapering fingerboards (with a hold down sled of course) ripping various parts to dimension etc plus lots more.

I have one of those I picked up a few years ago for $50,
Whilst it is a fairly sturdy machine, it is limited by having a poor fence system, no mitre slots, limited blade size and cutting depth, small table etc.
It's ok, better than a GMC but no world beater, I would not pay much.

Hi Jeff, you certainly got a bargain at $50. Yes they are not a world beater but they are better than GMC as you noted and certainly better than nothing. But for lutherie with a small footprint in a small workspace they would be very useful. I have a Jet with a wide rip capacity that I never use (the wide capacity that is) and it takes up an enormous amount of space and I tend to bump into the rails rather than than use them :)

For a small workshop I think they would be good provided, as you say, you got it cheap.

I'd like to be able to say good things about it but it's a frustrating machine.
Stock, the saw can cut about 42mm depth, Ive got it to 50 by using a 215mm blade and modifying the splitter to clear.
So forget about using it to cut a scarf joint. No tilt on the table either.
The stock fence pivots around a central post and is unusable for either the tablesaw or jointer so I have to clamp in a timber fence.
Height adjustment for saw and planer is pull a lever and lock off, no fine adjustment.

If it was me I would wait and get the Durden Pacemaker rather than the Junior. My 40yo+ Pacemaker does have a mitre slot and does have fine adjustment of saw depth and I have a 9" blade, but it will take a bigger blade. The table does not tilt, however. When I bought it from an old retired woodworker I also bought a new mitre fence and a new rip fence, but have never used the rip fence. It needed cleaning up and lubricating, but apart from that is solid and runs very smooth. Also never used the planer because I bought a 12" Woodfast planer/thicknesser. The Durden planer is a PITA to set up and adjust. With a simple jig the saw works great for cutting fret slots, and I think you really need the fine adjustment for fret slots. Durden used to have spare parts, even for the very old machines, but looks like they no longer exist so spare parts may be difficult, but you can still get the instruction manual from FW Hercus.

Here's a beauty if ur in Vic....A lot of good old iron in a 12/8 combo still looking very pretty after all these years, she's probably about 1958 to mid 60's...tis a bit on the xie side though, but if set up well and covered when not in use, she would see anyone of us out and then some with the nice crisp cuts you will only ever get from a vibration free heavy weight of that class.

Wow it would want to be a good'n..$510 is a tremendous amount of money to pay for a nail...but we must let the marked decide I suppose..and its got just over 7 days to go before it makes up its mind.

Could be worth a call if ur in NSW though, some good wood and other stuff to be had....but I have my doubts there will be any bargains waiting...comes across too jaded to be giving anything away, either that or just too tight to pay for a proper add...but then you never really know do ya..

Cheers

I saw that listing too Kim....I am not sure that the people who are bidding understand that they are not bidding for all the things in the list....As you pointed out he is using it as an ad but eBay and the bidders might see it differently. Why else would people bid a nail up to over 500 dollars?
