Unfortunately, he plays with a pick. Nylon strings and picks should NEVER mix in my opinion. The sound is just not musical to my ears. What could have been great, became merely a couple a fast fingers attached to a guy with no ears. My bias probably comes from the couple of years of classical guitar classes I did as a kid.
Of course, HE's the successful jazz muso, and I'm an ordinary schmo. So I'm probably wrong

Hi Joel,
The style was largely defined by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grapelli in the Hot Club of Paris. Here is a clip of Django playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek5kUOxP5CQ I think the use of the pick is integral to the sound. But back then it would have been gut and not nylon so I dont know either, Im going through a gypsy jazz thing, here's a couple more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jLnuv4j ... re=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIeCBw6w ... re=related
Hows the weather there?

G'day Sebastiaan,
The guy could certainly play. And with only 2 working fingers!!!
Those early recordings don't have that harsh attack that a pick played on nylon strings has. Could have been the limitations of early recording equipment or the gut strings.
The weather here is bloody nice. Mid 20's to low 30's. Christmas was actually cold in Sydney. It was 23 degrees and I had to put a jacket on!
