Re: Difference between thicknesser and planer
A thicknesser is essentially used to work a board down to a desired thickness. A planer (jointer) is used to work a flat surface into a board. It's common practice to work one flat surface into a board on a jointer before using that flat surface as a reference surface while passing it through a thicknesser.
If you're building acoustics then a thicknesser isnt that useful IMHO......working spruce tops and other tonewoods through a thicknesser isn't a good idea, a drum sander is a better way to quickly remove material. If youre building electrics then thicknessers seem to be of more use.
A jointer...handy for working a flat surface into a neck blank but I could never justify the expense in my workshop....my No 8 veritas jointer plane does the same job and it doesn take that long.

Re: Difference between thicknesser and planer
When I'm slicing plates and sides [resawing] on the bandsaw, I run each new cut [on the main board] through the thicknesser and then back to the bandsaw and cut another slice, and so on. This way I have one good clean face on each piece to go into the thickness sander for the final end thickness, or close to it.
