Tear out
Tear out
In a moment of absent minded stupidity I pulled off some binding tape to quickly and took strands of the soundboard off with it. The missing fibres also got damaged. The tear out is too deep to sand out and I’m fresh out of good ideas for fixing it invisibly.
I have tried repeating the tear out on left over pieces of the WRC but none are creating the right sized shards.
If anyone has any experience of helping ‘heavy handed idiots’ and have a solution for me I’m desperately in need.

Re: Tear out
I ended up drop filling with lacquer the last time this happened. It took quite a lot of doing but it did work.

Re: Tear out
I drop fill with gluboost fill and finish. I wait to drop fill until after I have sealed the top, usually shellac for me. I could see drop filling with lacquer if lacquer is going to be used to finish the top. I find any wood fill always shows more. Sometimes even the matching bit of chip out, as the cross grain glue lines shows.
Re: Tear out
I fill that sort of thing after it's been sealed and even after the first session of clear on it. I also have a selection of timber shades of water color pencils that I can add some grain lines etc. that will blend in should it be required. The tinniest bit of color and a smudge perhaps with your finger tip can do wonders.
It's happened several times over the years and I'm certain that I'd be the only one that would be able to tell you if or where a repair had been done.

Re: Tear out
Gentlemen, thank you very much for the advice, I agree that filling it with splinters will always look bad, I will seek out some water colour pencils.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Re: Tear out
Also to add to whats been recommended above, ever so lightly sand the edges of the tear out so as to remove any reflective edges on the finished product

Re: Tear out
Only a newbie here Alan. Have you tried putting a drop of water on the tear out> Have had success with it on a couple of deep dings on a top. I used demieralised water. Had to do it about 3 times before it raised sufficiently.
Re: Tear out
an alternative is to highlight the mistake like this, use paua or some contrasting timber or etc etc route groove, shellac, then superglue, level and smooth and job done
