Planely organised
Just feeling a little bit proud of myself at the moment, while i've been trying to organise this new workshop i decided to organise my hand planes in their own cabinet, this opportunity came about also because while trying to get rid of an old entertainment unit nobody wanted i decided to keep it for the timber [pine], so i took it apart and REBIRTHED some of it into my new plane cabinet.
Rod.

There's a problem with that bottom shelf......too much empty shelf space. Only one way to fix that

Re: Planely organised
It's a little embarrassing really, i've been a carpenter all my working life and really taken pride in my tools and how sharp i kept them, but since i've been involved in the finer art of lutherie i've discovered another level of tool use, maintenance, and preparation, and really appreciate the lengths one must go to achieve a satisfactory result with timber when it really matters, and i am REALLY enjoying my hand tools,, as well as the machinery.simso wrote:I love hand tools

Re: Planely organised
The re-birthed cabinet adds a very nice touch to your shed, well done Rod! I think I would have done away with the door glass. At least for me nothing beats instant access to a tool (maybe because I don't have instant access to many of my tools).
I was thinking something along the same lines, although in the opposite direction: the cabinet is already almost full, not much space left for more toys!kiwigeo wrote:There's a problem with that bottom shelf......too much empty shelf space. Only one way to fix that

Great use for an 'old' cabinet Rod. That bottom shelf Martin speaks of, is that where the chainsaw & four inch grinder are going?

Nick, I'm sorry to upstage you here but I've just finished installing a 3x3 shed to house a160 horse power stump grinder with tungsten carbide cutters to carve my tops now, the old method was taking to long

I did the same thing a while ago Rod, mainly cause I wanted to try to keep the rust off my steel so I put a door on (perspex so I don't break it) and I use those VCI biscuits (they give off a gas that keeps the rust down) that they put in electrical switchboards.

Re: Planely organised
Didn't mean to upstage you Rod, I bought the pine for the box and meranti for the door from Bunnies, not much recycling going on there. I did want to draw attention to the Anti rust biscuits though as that was my main reason for the cabinet.
We did however use local croc skin rather than imported leather.

Re: Planely organised
Your rebirthing looks great Rod.
I made a toolchest for the same reason that Jim did - try to stop "edge" tools from getting surface rust from the high-ish humidity. I made the box airtight with foam weather stripping, and use a "DampRid" product available from bunnys to remove water from the air in the box. Seems to work OK.
Thanks,
GregL.

Hi Rod,
The mallet is from HNT Gordon, I think it's Cooktown Ironwood.
Thanks,
Greg.
