Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Hi Guys,
I don't post a lot in the forum, but I'm a great lurker.
Anyway, I've been looking around for an equivilent to the Stewmac guitar makers vise and I can buy them straight out of the factory. I'm not sure if anyone else has done this on this forum, but I couldn't find a post about it.
They're gonna cost me $AUD96 each for a pack of 10 including shipping plus whatever the docks charge.
If I can presell them to members and make $20 or something per unit for my time I'll be happy.
I estimate after fees they'll be $110-125 odd here in Adelaide. If someone has an idea about how to calculate dock fees I'd appreciate it. I know you can buy them straight out of the US but they still cost $200 with shipping, so if you want more than one like I do, this might save a hundred bucks or so.
So if anyone's keen just post on here and we'll see if we can make it go.
Ok that's it.
Cheers
Steve

I have a family member who buys muscle cars and motorbikes from the US. I had him throw in one of these http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/200351 ... -Vise.aspx on his last trip. If its the same as this it is a very nice vice.

This is the one I have. A nice bit of kit. I made a new set of cork lined jaws for the vise and it was even better.Jeremy D wrote:I have a family member who buys muscle cars and motorbikes from the US. Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the interest. Sorry I've been away, we're having a baby.
The vise looks exactly like the one for sale here-
http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/200351 ... -Vise.aspx
Except the bolts are Nickel and not black, like the stewmac one. They are all made in taiwan, so I reckon it's the same mob. It's a small gamble I think, no one else makes them that I can find.
I'm trying to copy an image from the site but it's tiny. It's on Alibaba in case you were wondering. I'm not in it for the money, I'd just like to get some vises.
The first quote for shipping was $1400 for air freight. The second was about $150 or thereabouts for sea freight, plus a handling fee, so they'll come in at $US895 per pack of 10. So lets call it $105/115 guestimate each after customs, although no GST should payable under $1000.
I'm gonna have to cough up the full amount as a wire transfer, which I'm fine with, I bought a large CNC that way, and there'll be some running around, so is everyone cool with me adding $20 per unit for my time and bookwork and coordination efforts etc?
I'd like to be as transparent as possible.
Also, I have no clue what the dock will charge. My cnc was 700kg cost $6K and I got slugged $2.4K total at the dock.
I'm pretty sure this won't be as dramatic. I'll call a broker at Pt Adelaide on Monday.and see what they have to say.
If you want to go ahead, I can get my Paypal account to set up a fund, but they charge 3% so bear that in mind, because I don't want to pay it myself, or we can go on trust and do transfers to an account an I'll send the wire transfer to Mr Lee in Taiwan.
I have a proper shop and have been here for a decade, just so you know.
http://www.salviguitars.com.au
Ok, that's where I'm at. Check out the link, check my figures, check your figures, see if you want 1 or 2 and let me know.
Some people have PM'd me, that's fine.
Keep the questions here on the forum and the orders in the PM's.
Thanks guys. See how you go.

Steve,
Isn't GST assessed on value of goods PLUS freight?

Yep - and their handling fees, if it goes through several departments each department likes to add their own fees. Had this happen when I imported a machine from USA several years back.kiwigeo wrote:Steve,

So looking at the prices the op has listed above, it'll get slugged with tax and fees, plus customs broker fees as he suggested above he has a broker.
Not working out quite so cheap now?

Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
I'll chat to the broker on Monday and see what he says. I'm aware there are some pretty obscure "fee structures" in place at the docks. We'll see how it goes. It'll still be be under a grand including shipping.
Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Yes, but only when the value of the goods themselves exceeds $1000kiwigeo wrote:Steve,

So you could have $1000 Au of goods with $300 shipping and insurance and pay no Duty or GST
Get to $1001 and you pay duty if applicable then GST on value of (goods+duty+shipping and insurance)
Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Thanks for your efforts Steve,
I'm still keen , Just give us a total when you can and I'm sure enough of us will be interested to make it worth while.
Cheers,

Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
As above..the total amount is $USD895 INCLUDING shipping.
Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Which at the current exchange rate is over the AU1k max
You could wait until the Aussie dollar rises, however it gets worked out at the rate of the day customs do their paperwork, not at the time of purchase. I have been stung by this importing cars while the dollar was up and then down

The cutoff point is $1000aud on value of goods only not including shipping
The exchange rate that is used is the rate applied on the day the goods were posted or exported.

I meant exactly how much you would like from each of us once you work it out.
Again thanks for your efforts.
Even with worst case , will probably still be cheaper than paying full retail from the US + freight.

Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
I'd be interested if I knew a price. It seems that there are a lot of variables, customs?, GST?, broker fees?, etc. I'm all for $20 for the OP, but it seems that the final price could blow out a bit without knowing what the extras are.....
I wish I was half the man my dog thinks I am....

Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
What I have been told in the past more than once is that postage is a product that we have bought overseas and that they must tax us on this. They won't argue or see reason.
Basically, when customs have your items you have a week to pay, there's no negotiation, if you don't pay they send them back. No grey, its black and white.
I had to pay $285 yesterday for customs duties on some parts. Its a fact of life. That's not all tax, they add handling fees etc in the mix too. The value on the paperwork was a "back order" value, a lot of the items aren't even in the box. Do you think they cared? No. Its pay or they send them back. I asked to speak to a manager instead of some asian accented person I couldn't understand. I was transferred to a complaint line where a computer hung up on me. I called back and when I finally got through was told by a voice recording the wait time is some crazy amount of time so I hung up. You don't get to argue with customs, even if they're wrong and you're right, you pay or it gets sent back.

Go down in your link to where it explains VoTI and it states the taxes value is the sum of items plus freight plus insurance etc etcjeffhigh wrote:http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp
