The red material ( as is heartwood colour in timber broadly ) is extractives the tree produces to render it's inactive wood more durable . When I'm selective logging for figured timber I'm always on the lookout for edge trees with more character , trees are a bit like people , those out on their own tend to be a lot more interesting .
