Hi all
I picked up a nice slab of Fijian Marhogany well quarterd & dried .Enough to cut about 10 guitar sets.
Has anybody used it for acustic guitar bodys and is it any good or will make a lot necks out of it insteed ?
What do you think

All the fijian hog in my shop is neck stock but it seems to be widely used for acoustic back and sides.

Have only been using it for necks on my last few but certainly seems like nice timber. Rings like a bell. If I had re-saw capability and found some nice quarter-sawn stuff I would give it a go for back & sides for sure.

Mahogany doesn't have to be boring if you don't slather it with stain and porefiller like CF Martin.
Try a couple of coats of shellac on the surface to see if it appeals to you for back and sides

Ive gone through stacks of this mahogany with furniture since it appeared on the market and since then I have always preferred it over the Honduras for its looks , I can get dead matches for the old Cuban with it exept for the weight, a big difference there.

Last time that I needed some I bought a few extra quater sawn boards for the tone wood stash.

The one thing that has surprised me when reading about you guys doing necks with it is that no one has had a problem with movement , this must be due to the careful attention they are placing in selecting and preparation.

Myself and any other cabinet makers that use it that I talk to usually nod in agreement at how much the stuff likes to move about compared to Honduras or Brazilian .

Hi Steve

I realise you are enquiring about Fijian mahogany, but I just wanted to
say that I have made an all mahogany OM style guitar using Macassar
mahogany, plantation grown in Indonesia, see link below.
It was a lovely timber to work with and so far has been very stable.

Cheers Bruce
