Mango wood? Any good for instruments?

A mate has offered me a solid mango wood table. It has some really decent slabs that I could make some nice tops for electric basses/guitars. Just wondering what people know about it? Where's it from, what's it like to work, etc?

I'm keen for it actually...

P.s. he's got another table there made of solid aussie hardwood's from just after WW2. Love that one too.

I had an email from David Freeman (Canadian luthier) last year with pics of a mango acoustic he'd built...he didnt mention any issues working with the wood.

No dramas with mine so far. Bends easily, but doesn't want to hold it's shape too well, so it stays in the mould all the time...I sand mine on the homemade jobby I have and it was easy. Feels kinda "waxy" if that makes any sense, but glues well with tiebond, and the back is to die for....

It's not spalted, but it still looks nice.....Got a mate who saw this set and asked if I wanted a section or two from the trunk of a Biggie he's taking down soon.........

It's used often in Ukuleles. I've got a set that was given to me that I will build with once I'm satisfied it's dried.

(Sorry Pete - and before having read about, and seen mango wood I probably would have asked the same question).

Thanks Markus! I find there are more interesting wood than the few traditional used wood.

Today I braced the top, as usual using hardwood instead of spruce.......
