Truss rod installation.

Hi everyone,

My current build in progress is an OM cut-a-way, with the truss rod access at the nut as per the plans.
A few questions please:
1/ What keeps this truss rod in place from moving up the neck (away from the sound-hole)?
2/ How do members re-inforce this part of the neck?
3/ How is the truss rod cover mounted in place?
Any unfortunate mistakes with this process would be worth a mention as well.

Truss rod cover is traditionally screwed in place but you could use neodymiums. Alternatively for the guitar I am on at the moment I have chosen a friction/push fit.

yeah. Double action truss rod shouldn't need any reinforcement, as it acts on itself.....Old style single rods are different....Gilet's site says it has a pdf of using truss rods with thier hardware, but I've never been able to view it. Maybe you need to buy it?

The truss rod I have is from a group buy about 2-3 yrs ago, 385mm in length.

How do others re-inforce the scarf join, part of the neck, as I assume this area would be weakened with removal of material for the truss rod to fit in?

Hmmm I guess it may get a little weaker but still plenty strong enough to hold the strings. I am not sure how you are scarfing but my truss rod housing does not touch the scarf itself. Most of the broken headstocks I have seen don't break the scarf they break the wood and maybe if you reinforced that area that breaks, then a decent blow might just break it somewhere else. I don't add any reo some others here may though.

The above link is a video of me routing two truss rod slots for a truss rod that looks very much the same as what you have pictured.

The video shows the marking, setup and the fit. It also shows both a neckthru and a bolt on slot.

In the video the neck is Wenge which is much harder to route than something soft like Mahogany etc, so it puts up a bit more of a fight.

It depends on where you have your scarf joint. under the fret board, or in the peg head. I always have mine in the peg head and they are reinforced with both a head plate and a back graft. Uke necks get a CF truss rod right through into the head stock (overkill for sure) and guitars get 2 CF truss rods run up either side of the Allied truss rod (that's what you have pictured) with 6mm of neck material on other side of the adjustable truss rod.

As others have said,the truss rod holds itself in place as it resists the neck bow from string pressure, also if you've cut your slot correctly the truss rod should be a nice snug fit to begin with.

2/ How do members re-inforce this part of the neck?

Shouldn't really need re-enforcing unless you have a very narrow neck at the nut (which would be unplayable!). I used to scarf joint my necks (under the fingerboard) and I only ever had one 'break' at the scarf early on in the piece but it wasn't because of the reduced amount of wood at this point, it was a joint failure simply because of a poor joint prep on my part & the glue line separated .

3/ How is the truss rod cover mounted in place?
