Strange colouration in WRC

Post by Jeremy D » Sat Mar 23, 2013 12:57 pm

Hi have just joined and sanded the top for my second build. As I sanded a strange colouration on one plate began to appear. I thought that I could avoid it on the top but it has shown through. Any ideas what cause this? I am thinking of using another piece for purely aesthetic reasons but do you think this would effect the structure and tone of the guitar if I chose to use it.

Here are some pic's

Ok so been googling around. Is this an example of a pitch pocket? Albeit a fairly benign?

Keep it for a parlour?

Only 'causeI'm trying to make each one look as good as I can, and a "stain" might shit me....
I wish I was half the man my dog thinks I am....

Cheers,

Stain would $hit me too Nick. I am going to try another. I may abandon WRC altogether yet :). Where the stain is it would be more like a uke I recon.

That pinkish coloration is not uncommon with WRC. Not much you can do about it, but it is not gong to affect the tonal qualities of the wood. It depends on what you want to get out of your second guitar. Is it just the appearance/colour of the soundboard or can you concentrate on getting the little details of the binding and stuff like that right, which might teach you more in the long run.

Just a couple of things to think about.

Hi graham,

It's not the pinkish colour I am worried about. It's the big brown stain thing in the top picture. Looks kind of like my dog took a squat on it. Seems to go all the way through too because it is showing through on the other side as you can just make out in the third picture. I have another set I am going to try tomorrow.

If you ever decide to do a two layer top with cedar inside and spruce outside that would hide it fairly well. Alternatively a two tone top like Tacchi's Coclea Thucea.

Nice Gibson-esque sunburst would work nicely.

Yes, I have seen this before. I'm not sure what causes it but I have sometimes been able to draw it out with naptha, or failing that, acetone. And sometimes not. Its worth a try although I think it is a great excuse to do a sunburst top. (which I have never done)

You could probably get at least 2 uke tops out of that set, and with careful though to book matching and size, perhaps a couple more. Not needing to do anything to drastic to eliminate that mark from any of the sets.

Awesome,

Thanks guys. I will give the naptha a little try. If not I will save it for a uke (or 2) down the road :) .

A Cuatro Venezolano in this style would also solve the problem. ;)
