What sort of timber is this?

Post by slowlearner » Mon Mar 11, 2013 8:38 pm

Been scabbing old furniture again and came home with a desk. A lot of it was the wrong size or shape, but I managed to scab the top, back and some side panels off it. The top is like 500 wide and 1500 or so long. And being made of just two planks, it will be separated and then resawed into matched tops. The back is pine. However, I'm sort of wondering what the side panels and top are made of. Any ideas?

It's hardwood of some sort with darker marks that look a little like swamp ash, but it's too heavy for that. The grain also appears to be slightly wavey. I reckon the desk is a minimum of 20 years old and looks to have been re-varnished at some stage or even stripped and varnished having once been painted.

The top could be tallow wood, Eucalyptus microcorys.
