A few picts from Cairns

Post by Allen » Sat Feb 23, 2008 7:43 am

I was out trying to catch a Barra last weekend and took the camera along. Didn't catch any fish, lost a new lure, and the sand flies and mossies were ferocious. But the scenery was great.

This is across the inlet from the city of Cains.

These are out in the backwaters of the inlet at high tide. To catch Barra you need to lure right up to the mangrove roots and try to get them to bite. And yes, there are crocs in these waters. Just before Christmas there was a 4 foot baby one sunning himself on the bank of one of the drainage canals that run past the panel shop I work at. Was only 2 meters from were I park my motor bike.

Nice pics Allen.

Great fishing for Barra Allen. Taste fantastic and put up a great fight.

A friend of mine took me Barra fishing in near Kakadu.

I caught the first one and was absolutely delighted with the "monster" I'd reeled in.

He took one look at it and said "Nah mate, you'll have to throw it back".

My response was, "Bullshit', there's no way known I'm throwing this beauty back".

It was undersized .

I'm used to catching flathead.:?

When the wife and I were spending 1 1/2 years traveling around the country, we spent 3 weeks in Kakadu. Loved the place. That was the first time I'd seen a Barra, and these crazy buggers were fishing while standing on a causeway with brown water up to their knees, and 5 of the biggest crocs I'd ever seen where no more that 100 meters from them sunning themselves on the bank.

If I'd caught a Barra under those conditions, there's no way I'd through it back either. But I did see some monster ones pulled out.

I've never bothered trying to figure out what it is Kim. There's just so bloody much stuff that flies in and out of the yard that you can't keep up with it. I woke up to a god awe full squawking a few weeks ago at about 3 am. Came out into the kitchen and there was a Paradise Kingfisher holding its own against the two cats, who didn't really know how to handle something that was determined not to be breakfast. I couldn't get a picture of him, too busy saving him. He jumped into my wifes hands, gave her finger a good bite, but settled down when he figured out he was safer there than on the kitchen floor.

Here's a picture of one from the Australian Bird Image Database.
