BUYING WOOD!

Post by Partridge » Tue Jul 03, 2012 1:47 am

I'm getting back into building after many years.

I've been looking around for good places to source tops suitable for carving, pref high grade.
I'm from Melbourne so if I could find a local place to visit that would be great!
If any one could recommend somewhere I would be a happy chap! It seems all the links I've found over the past few 'years' always seem to be dead or old stock, which is why I ask.

If it takes a plane trip to collect some wood I'm up for it.

recommendations or anyone who has some nice wood they want to let fly? please shoot me a message :)

Mathews timber in Vermont, not master grade but much of their Sitka spruce is very nice for carving tops, you may also find some useful rock maple[necks] Figian mahogany, Figian rosewood, Qld maple, US cherry, Makore, Wenge.
No air travel required if you live in Melbourne, good luck.

Partridge"" it would be nice if you would let us know your name,, if you do find yourself in Mathews Timbers yard ask for Ian, he's a guitar enthusiast and always helpful when a customer comes in looking for something a bit special.
Cheers,,

Hi Guys,

Sorry my name is Justin Partridge. you may see me here more often than not going into the future.

When I worked for Maton Guitars, years back, we used Matthews, so it's good to see they're still around.

Maton get a lot of material through Mathews, i think they probably get first dibbs on a pack when it arrives in the yard. If you like driving, Bowerbird timbers at Millgrove up past Warburton deal in reclaimed or saved timbers, you might get onto some NZ Kauri or some nice quarter sawn Blackwood, it is a bit of a drive but the scenery is nice.[ http://www.bowerbirdtimber.com]
Good luck Justin
