Hi,
I am (slowly) making a tenor uke, and I was wondering about how to accurately cut the fret slots. I have a stew mac fret slotting jig, and a stew mac fret scale template for Fender guitar scale (25.5"), and I noticed that from the 7th fret on the Fender template is almost exactly the same fret positions as a 17" tenor uke fret slot positions. So, can I use the partial Fender fret scale template to cut tenor uke fret slots?
Thanks,
GregL.
tenor uke scale length question
Re: tenor uke scale length question
Yes
just measure what scale length that gives you and use it to locate neck joint position and bridge saddle

Re: tenor uke scale length question
That's the template I use for all uke sizes. Just find two slots, 12 slots apart that match half your scale length. That'll give you your new nut slot. That goes for any size uke too.
Re: tenor uke scale length question
You could just do the calc's. 17.??? whatever the divider is, and end up with any scale length you want.....I've got it written down at home
I had to fix up the fret positions in Kinkade's book because they were out...
Edit: I just read your post and saw you have the jig.....I made my own.....

Re: tenor uke scale length question
Hi,
Thanks. I thought it was probably OK, and when I thought about it after your replies, it made sense.
Using the template makes fret slot cutting very simple, no measuring, just slide the template to the next stop and cut.
Nick, I'm a slow builder as it is, I'd be glacially slow if I didn't take advantage of some pre-made jigs!
Thanks,
GregL.

Re: tenor uke scale length question
Or you could just give Micheal Connor a call and get any fret scale cut to the exact specifications you want. I've got every uke scale length going, and some I'll never use....but I could if I wanted to.
As he's in Corndale, and a 17" tenor is pretty standard, he may have one on the shelf and just a short drive for you. BTW, he likes Coopers and that will certainly get you in the door.

Hi Allen,
Good idea!
I've been to Micheal Connors place dozens of times, and he's often helped me. But I don't want to slow his rosette cutter progress!
Thanks,
GregL.
