Yeah they shut the Uni down officially at lunchtime although the place was pretty much a ghost town when I left.
Didn't need to wax the skids Lillian, car tyres soon got clogged with ice so skidding was the order of the day trying to get home, thank gawd for traction control. We don't grit the roads here as they do in the northern hemisphere.

I wouldn't write off global warming simply because of a snow storm. 2011 was actually a very dry year for Canterbury with rainfall 50 to 79% below average.

Here's some cool footage of a brace of KiwiRail locomotives clearing snow on the line through Arthurs Pass. Not the conventional way of clearing snow off a rail line (locos would normally have a plough on front) but hey if it works it works.

No Marty I wouldn't write off climate change, but I get a good laugh from that Flannery Clown, Apparently you lot down there have been out of water since 2007, and major dams will never be full again, six months after predicting sea levells would rise by 1m he buy's a million dollar water front property, If they got rid of these sort of clowns the issues might be taken more seriously.

Adelaide isn't exactly out of water at the moment....there's a recently completed desal plant sitting in mothballs out at Port Standvac.

Sanding (gritting) the roads is the norm here yes, well, usually. If you are lucky they will sand the main roads and or get de-icer down on the on/off ramps. Or not. Depends on who makes the call when to do it and if they can get it done in time to be useful. The last time it really snowed it took me 6 hours to make the 1.5 - 2 hour drive. Some people slept on the interstate because it was blocked by a jack-knifed bus and a semi. Took them 14 hrs to get it reopened.
