Contemporary Stand
Contemporary Stand
Hi all,
Chose NOT to post this in the gallery, (as not an instrument!!), but I am interested in the opinions out there.
With no build in the immediate offing, and arising out of the need to find something spectacular for my son's birthday, I put this design together for a stand for his new baby:
Concept came from a scouring of all the speciality timber stands I could find on the web, and the technique "borrowed with pride" from a kerf-bent fruitbowl I saw in the Bungendore gallery.
Timber is Merbau for the bent elements, and Mackay Cedar for the turned components.
All structural elements bent and laminated up on jigs, using Titebond.
Kerfed using a 2mm blade on T/S, 1" spacing for the uprights, and 1/4" for the support. The tight radius for the latter required the lamination to be pre-bent on the hot pipe.
Detail on the construction.
Finish is satin lacquer, and padding leather.
Colapsed for transport / storage. Unfortunately the design limits how well this works.
And in action, with my son's new Gilet acoustic.

Re: Contemporary Stand
That looks great!
I really love this design, it's between elegant and invisible.
How do you secure the prop to the U-shaped part?

Looks very nice Alastair. And secure. I especially like the way you've done the turned feet.

Thanks all for the kind comments
Probably greener than red
The portrait is of a married Xhosa woman, painted by an artist we were friendly with in South Africa.
I'm actually not averse to the idea of doing these on a bespoke basis, if I could justify the prices I saw when I was looking at examples on the web.
Problem with still working full-time, is finding the time.
Markus, there is a dowel at the apex of the "U" which is a firm fit into the end of the prop.charangohabsburg wrote:That looks great!![]()

The stand looks great Alastair.
It must have been good to take the kerfed bits out of clamps after the glue up to feel them go from so flexible to so rigid.
Nice looking guitar as well , the Blackwood has a nice Shimmer to it.
