Snakewood

Post by woodrat » Sat Mar 03, 2012 11:15 am

Hi, I was wondering if anybody had used Snakewood to bind a guitar. It is a spectacular wood visually but I bet it bends like glass. I am going to be using it to bind the Brazilian Rosewood OM that I am going to make out of the BRW that I showed in the Wood Rebirthing thread. I was thinking that 2mm would be the maximum thickness you would want to try and bend it with. I would love to hear from anyone who has used it and their tips if any. Thanks in advance

John

2mm is the most I go with any binding John.

It's going to be a stunner. Can't wait to see what you do with this.

Thanks Allen, I cant wait either..:)....just getting the material together for this build has been a journey in itself:)

I usually make my bindings 2 or 2.1mm and the channel is ~1.9 so I cave a couple of 1/10s to scrape back so maybe I will be slightly narrower by a couple of tenths with the Snakewood because I expect it is very brittle.

I've used it a couple of times John, with no problems.

There's a couple of threads with pics here.

I just pre-bend them on the Fox Bender at around 60 thou. (1.5mm)
