Another Odd Question

Post by needsmorecowbel » Sat Jan 07, 2012 6:30 pm

Anyone know of any acoustic guitar manufacturers that use different Side Materials to their Back Materials?

Don't know of any factory builders that do this, but have seen some small volume boutique builders do it on occasion.

I don't know of anybody but I would imagine there's nothing to say you can't do it. The two would have to be complimentary to each other I'm guessing, you wouldn't want say, a Zebrano back with a highly flamed set of Blackwood sides. Of course your next trick would be convincing somebody to buy it unless they are of a 'non traditional' frame of mind  .

I saw a "harlequin" classical guitar in a Sydney (Chatswood) store not long ago. I think it was rosewood/cypress alternate on the back and sides. Can't remember the brand.

You could get some amazing contrasts with having darker sides, lighter purfling and a lighter back...mmmmmmmmm

Of course if you're as clever as Howard Keppler, then you can take that look to a whole new level...go Howard. 8)

It would really really really annoy you if you broke a set of those sides whilst bending after doing all the dovetail work haha.

Whenever I see that pic of Howard's "Dovetail Madness" guitar, I always think that that must have been made shortly after he got a dovetail jig as a gift  .

The man has some serious chops, probably cut them all by hand.

I have used different [/attachment]sides and back timbers on different instruments, this photo shows the last parlor guitar I built in this fashion. The timbers used were Old English Walnut [from an expensive gun stock blank] for the back, and New Guinea Rosewood for the sides. This guitar was sold two years ago it sounded great then and I'm still getting calls from the owner telling me of the praise the guitar gets on his travels.

Yes Martin, enough for 3 backs but no sides. It was rejected as a gun stock by the owner of this guitar, but as his wife bought it for him as a gift so he wanted to use it for something. I hesitated to suggest a guitar [as he and his wife already had 3 guitars and a mandolin that I had built for them] but I did and he went for the idea.

Something along the lines of: "You mean we could own more guitars? Brilliant we'll go for that idea!"

I often see gun stock blanks at Ottos here in Adelaide and thoughts of working a back set out of them has often crossed my mind. The gun stock blanks seem to be about the only decent guitar making wood at Ottos these days...the place is really going to pot.

Part of the definition of the" perfect wife", I'm not brave enough to list the others.
