Carins Ukulele Fest 2011
So who from the forum is going to attend the Cairns, Ukulele Fest this year?
Kerry my wife and I are going to spend the weekend up in Cairns and I would be like to meet any of you fellow forum members who are making the trip to the fest.
Cheers
Alan

Anyone in town is welcome to come by my place. Micheal is staying with me again this year as we are instructing the Cairns Uke Build this year. I'll fire up the Pizza oven most likely Saturday night for a feed, drinks and laughs.

You might need to bring the All Black first XV if he wants the pizza oven moved againNick wrote:You have a Pizza oven?Allen wrote: I'll fire up the Pizza oven most likely Saturday night for a feed, drinks and laughs.Might be worth coming over just for that!

I've got a few days off in the lead up to the fest week end, so if anyone wants a shed tour let me know. I'm only about 2min from the CBD (CBD's probably a bit of a stretch).

There bloody good pizzas Jim. You might want to reconsider.
I had to get a pizza oven to deal with all the off cuts from instruments that kept accumulating and I though "gee, I'll keep that little piece. Might come in handy". Now I look at them and don't even consider saving them. In the fire they go.
Also on offer is a French polish demo by MIcheal. We'll try and co-ordinate it better this time around.

Not even a sliver of Brazilian Rosewood here Nick, so I guess I won't see you next week?
I'm also doing up some sample boards with different finishes on them so we can compare some relatively easy finishes that can be done by anyone, and some more difficult ones like lacquer. They are going to be for the uke class but it's good to have these things on had when people come for a shed tour.

mmm - might have to take you up on Saturday night. I'm supposed to be taking the family to Green Island on Friday but the weather's looking bad.

Re: Carins Ukulele Fest 2011
Hi everyone. Micheal, Karen and I have been flat out from before dawn to well after dark and barely had a chance to pull up and breath. Another really big day again today. 14 instruments have to be ready for strings tomorrow so that means that they have been built with finish on in 3 days.
The schedule for the Festival is a bit different this year, with the world record attempt on Saturday night instead of Friday like last year. Karen doesn't want to have to cater to everyone with a pizza night after being in town on Saturday, so we're going to move the pizza oven night to Friday. Same deal, everyone is welcome. Alan Hamley won't be able to make it to Cairns until around mid day Saturday, but I've already touched base with him on that.
So for those coming to town the revised schedule is my place Friday night (let us know if you are coming). Saturday around 11am or so we'll be in my shed looking at wood etc and getting a French polishing demo by Micheal. Then as far as I'm aware it's then off to Liam's new shed to kick the tires. From there it's off to join in the World Record attempt at the Courthouse Hotel. Registration starts at 4pm with a 5pm attempt.
Karen tells me that we'll grab a bit to eat in town as the kitchen will be closed after helping to cater to the class all week, and then perhaps end back at our place for a casual night of drinks on the patio. Luthiers or wannabe's and muso's all welcome.

Re: Carins Ukulele Fest 2011
Where else but on a luthier's forum (with the possible exception of a swingers forum) could you post an open invite to people to come and admire your wood or watch somebody polishing theirs??
Hey Allen, I'm not even going to be in the same country but appreciate the effort you put into these things, hopefully somebody sees fit to present you & your wife with a little wooden plaque or something!

The plaque should be in four pieces, be Brazilian Rosewood and of a size suitable for a uke

Re: Carins Ukulele Fest 2011
I've got some New Guinea Rosewood that he can have (if he hasn't got enough already
). That's pretty much the same as Brazilian isn't it?
