question for nz luthiers

Hi guys.
I've been trying to find a gold coloured fretwire here in nz. I've looked at the websites of a few nz bassed companies but found nothing. I have also been to the two music stores in town ( Kingdom music and The Rock Shop) but their suppliers also have nothing.
Does anyone know where to find gold coloured (bronze, brass etc. ) fretwire in nz? I can order it from oz but as the postage is twice the cost of the product it would be nice if I could find it here.

I've just done some more investigating. Looked again at ]www.guataraust.com.au - thats where I saw the crazy postage - $AU25, 10 day postage; thats just for four feet of wire. I looked also at ALS - much more reasonable $AU8.50.
Beware of guataraust.
I want the wire for a classical guitar. Can you get a good result flattening radiused wire?

How do you staighten the wire?

I usually get mine from LMI but make up an order of several items, cuts the postage down when you spread it out over half a dozen bit's and pieces. I get plenty too so that I'm not having to order some for every guitar. But if you only plan on using it on one guitar then the Australian option would be a good way to go. If you ever need any in the future just contact me first, as I say I usually have plenty & don't mind posting you enough to complete a guitar. Mind you after having just said that, I don't have any of the wider stuff at the moment just the smaller (using LMI's coding) FWG74.

The idea is to insert the (slightly bent) fretwire, ends first into the slot, then tap progessively in from each end towards the fret centre. This means that as the fret flattens the little 'barbs' on the tang shift slightly sideways giving a better grip.

In Dan Erlewine's book on guitar repair he suggest leaving the wire in a tighter radius than the fret board. Hammer the ends in then when you push the middle down the barbs on the tang at the edges push apart slightly and under cut the fret slot to lock the fret wire in place. I have done this on all my guitars with no problems. I tap the wire in at each end then press it home with my arbor press. I also use a bit of white glue in the slot and have never had any fret lift out of the slot because they were a different radius.

Ive found that stuff arrives from LMI or Stewmac quicker than it does from here in Australia. If I want stuff in a hurry then I order from US.

No not really, as I say I'm usually buying several items at once & LMI is just one of those places I like to spend my money & have just gotten into that habit. I should try and shop closer to home (I do now inlay shell shipping has been stopped from the states) but old habits die hard. It's a bit like your favourite pair of jeans, sure they got holes & stains/ marks on them but they just feel so much more comfortable than that new pair of $200 Levi's in the closet
