Waitangi day is the national day of New Zealand Pad. When us colonial white fella's had been spreading our wings and finding new countries to overun & fill more of the globe with pink coloured countries, we turned up in NZ, in small numbers at first (mostly troops to fight with the locals!) then more & more. Good ole queen Vic decided to do a deal with all the native chiefs (Maori's lived in tribes & each tribe had a chief who effectively ran their part of the country) to "co habit" the land with them. The treaty was translated into Maori so the locals could understand it & all the chiefs & their entourage's were called to a place called Waitangi at the top of the North Island where they were all expected to sign it, a few left early before signing it & a few didn't show up (many of the South Island tribes who couldn't be bothered traveling the long distance for instance) so it didn't get 'fully' signed until 2 years later after the white governor had travelled the country getting signatures. But the important North Island chiefs had signed at Waitangi on February 6th so that is the day that is recognised & is celebrated as the day "New Zealand" came into being as a nation.
Just in the last few years though it's become more of a political platform for the maori's to highlight their grievances against the crown as they believe that the treaty isn't being followed & hasn't been in the past, but like any legal document written by crafty beggars, it is open to interpretation (as was the intention of the document in the first place! It was written to be deliberately ambiguous so as to allow the english to get away with many of their actions if they so wished).
Anyway, a brief potted history of Waitangi day.

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Plenty of tutorials on Youtube for the NZ Accent

Nick I was always taught it celebrated the day Captain Cook bought NZ for a sack of rice and a string of beads but there seems to be more to it than that?
Every time i see your damned avatar it reminds me of a line from a Woody Allen movie when the lonely shepherd rings his therapist "wheres a ma sheepa".

pssst Nick I might also ask you the hugest of favours one day bout sourcing a nice piece of blemish free rough cut Jade approximately nut size, from Hokitika tx

Well Steve,

Plastics be the way of the future to financial prosperity, ...well it as back in the 1950's and will be again when the oil runs out and we move to organic biodegradable plastics derived from the hemp plant or so they say. But then we know what all them there plastic people has to say.

Regarding man made leather... the new physics teaches that all matter is a perfect plastic, moldable substance controllable by our thoughts. Hmmm......

Hey Padma talking more about plastics have you seen those (try not to eat them)mouldable reconstituted horizontally sliced rubber eggs that they sell in a fast food chain..(that will remain nameless). They look like they are laser cut from a cylindrical tube (i knew i shoulda been more suspicious the 1st time or saw egg rings)

Ha! You trying to get me arrested? Ngai (pronounced- "nye")Tahu is the major South Island tribe, who through traditional 'cultural' rights own all of the greenstone in the South Island (even the stuff that hasn't been found yet). Mucho trouble if you are caught even picking a small stone out of the river beds(although you could claim you didn't know what it was because "raw" Greenstone looks like any other dull grey rock, you gotta know what 'the signs' are), a bloody big fine or jail time.Even the sub tribes of Ngai Tahu can only use small pieces to make personal jewellery. You can buy it from Ngai Tahu owned shops though but only as jewellery/objects, you cant buy raw stuff (funny how it has cultural significance to them but it's ok to buy it  Image ).

Captain Cook was a little earlier than the treaty, but the cheifs did receive a nice scarlett blanket each after signing  Beads & muskets were only used for land deals

Sure is & the proper Greenstone has a beautiful deep colour & lustre as opposed to the Chinese jade which is a little milky & what gets flogged off in their thousands as "greenstone" to unsuspecting tourists in the souvenir shops in town.

Padma, a genuine Greenstone Mere would set you back quite a few greenbacks (we're talking hundreds here) but you could get a jade one labeled "Greenstone" for a few bucks
