Alan, that's looking really good!! I like that simple rosette. This is gonna be sweet. BTW, are all those guitar cases in the first pictures full or empty?

Hey Tim, the myrtle piece looks great. Thanks for you help.

Thanks David, Kim, Allen, Tom, Ron and Serge for your support and encouragement.

Yes Ron the cases are are full. I am a baby boomer so the collection has been growing for sometime. Two thirds of my guitar collection cost $250 or less. There are some oldies among them like two parlors, dobro, classical, jazz box, dready, mandolin, weissenborn copy etc. Being a passionate muso I love them all. I live in the tropics so thats what the long guitar stand is all about. Lets the air circulate around the guitars helping to stop problems with humidity.

Thank you all again for your advice and support

Cheers

Alan

Looking like its going to be happening over the holidays Alan. How did you thickness the sides? Don't tell me by hand. That's just gonna take too many beers to contemplate in this heat.

I thicknessed some Qld. Walnut for back and sides with a drum sander, and I still spent a couple of hours on them. Hot work today.

G'day Allen,

I used a finishing sander on the sides mate. Still took me a few hours. Then some hand sanding to get a straight edge for the top to sit on. The tail block didn't take long. Bloody hot work today mate.

Cheers

Alan,

Another small step for Blueskind :D That's looking good, I usually profile the sides when I have the peghead and tailblock glued in as it gives me a bit more wriggle-room. I thought the tailblock looked a bit large but then saw the pencil and realized it was a "zoomshot" :)

Thanks for your comments Dave. I wasn't sure weather to go with bending first then profiling the sides or as I ended up doing. It sort of made sense to me to do the profiling first so I went with that method. Time will tell if it was a good decison or not.

Merry Christmas

Cheers

Finally the bending iron is fixed. This weekend I finished bending the sides for the weissenborn copy. It took sometime getting them right i can tell you. I am a patient man!!! I used the iron on 5, no problems.

Please see pic

Image

The first effort at bending wasn't so pleasant and I scorched the inside of one side. It sanded out ok thank goodness. The first side I soaked as per Cumpiano book. Not such a good idea as the tailblock end of the side cupped. Today I just wet the side in the shower for a few minutes and then spayed when dry during the bending process and that worked good.

So the side bending job I was most concerned about turned out a success thanks to the good advice from all of you on the ANZL forum.

Thanks for looking

Cheers

Yes Allen it has been a drawn out stage of the build. Thanks for your advice and encouragement.

Thanks Dave for your web site too as I have used your weissenborn build as a reference.

Looking really good Alan, you have every right to be a happy man you've done a great job so far and you're well on the way to having a first class wissey to add as the marque of your collection.

Cheers

Alan,

Well the neck is definitely hollow . . . as is the body :D

One more small step for "slidekind".

The linings, neck support and side supports where glued in this weekend. Here are a few pics for those of you who like to see how the guitar is comming along. Starting to look something like a weissenborn guitar copy now. I enjoyed watching the shape of the guitar taking place. All good fun!!!

Alan,

Nearer and nearer - definitely looks like a Weiss ! That second photo is an art installation - almost Miro'ish. Maybe you should keep that and start another Weiss to play :D

I'd be interested to see how your top bracing takes shape.

Hi David,

Thanks for you interest. Steady steady the guitar is comming along.

I'm going to follow the MIMF plans bracing. I am very inexperienced at guitar building so i think the best method for me is to follow the plan and see how it turns out. If any issues arise with this guitar then I will change my next build. I have also started another weissenborn copy using Blackwood. So i'm learning on the sassafrass guitar and when I am satisfied that a building stage has gone right, i carry out the same stage on the Blackwood. My next stage on the Blackwood is bending the sides, gluing in the headstock, tail block and linings etc.

All good fun aye!!!!

Thanks for your support Dave.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

Just a little more progress for those of you who are enjoying watching the weissenborn copy take shape.

The endgraft is Tassie Myrtle to match fretboard, bridge, headplate and binding. Thats if i'm game at having a go at binding!!!

Image

I'm using hot hide glue for the first time. The back has been braced and I think i'm getting the feel of using this stuff. I was pleasently surprised the high grade glue dose not smell to bad!!! I pracised using the glue as it and did plenty of dry runs to get a routine going. Here are a few pics:

Should be able to brace the top this long weekend if the humidity stays low. I am feeling a great sense of accomplishment at the present.

Thanks for looking.

Alan,

It's getting ever closer - looking really good!! The size an number of those back braces still amazes me though - still a plan is a plan.

Hhg is good stuff. The main thing to learn is not to be afraid of it. If you're worried you messed up just take the joint apart, clean up and start again. For joints where you need a longer open time to get things done fish glue is a great alternative.

Thanks Dave for your interest and support. The brace design is as per the MIMF plan.

Here are two pics of the top all braced. These pics where taken a few hours ago and the X brace patch has been glued on and is in the go bar deck at the moment.

Again the bracing is as per the MIMF plan.

Thanks again for looking.

Looking good mate.

What are your plans with respect to shaping the braces? Will you scallop them or stick to the original design?

Thanks Richard for your comments.

I am going to stick with the plan. I don't really know what I am doing so when in doubt, stick o the plan. I will then have a yard stick instrument.

I'm buildng an all blackwood weissenborn copy also at the same time as the sassafrass. I will be bracing it over the next few weeks. Then the plan is to finish off the sass and see how it turns out. Then I can make some modifications to the blackwoods bracing if i feel it needs it. The Blackwood rim is also 10mm thicker than the original plan. So some fun and experimenting to come!!!!

Cheers

Alan
