Some smartass reported 'widespread luting' on twitter and all I could think of was a bunch of balladeers wandering the rubble. Hope you all survived intact down there Nick and any other forum members in the area.

Re: Christchurch quake; widespread luting
Yeah thanks Morgan, shaken & stirred! Family's all in one piece, thank some omnipotent being. House isn't so lucky though, being built on sand and close to the sea, during the shake the sand turned to wet cement (liquifaction I believe it's called) so we've done a bit of a Titanic and sunk, some parts of the house up to 300mm's, none of the doors close now (The ones that were shut are now permanently shut!) and there's cracks throughout the house. Power hasn't long been on after 4 1/2 hours but still no water, not sure when that's supposed to return. The road's got a few new drainage holes/chasm's in it now. But we are still here and breathing (although the aftershocks are still strong and have a pucker factor of 9) so once it settles down it'll be time to get some of those insurance premiums back! with interest. I believe central city is a mess with some of the older buildings falling over.

I'm amazed there have been no reports of injuries, and very glad to hear that you are all ok. Houses can be rebuilt. Somebody on twitter has posted a few pics here (a few more than what the Herald has currently) : http://nigelparker.me/post/1059857943/chchearthquake

Couple of people been taken into to hospital apparently after being hit by falling debris but yeah damned lucky! They've calculated it to have been only 10 K's deep so that's why all the damage. Certainly the worst one I've experienced, they are usually rollers but this one just about tossed you out of bed. Unfortunately my camera's at work otherwise I would have thrown a few pics up.

Re: Christchurch quake; widespread luting
There have actually been a few injuries...one guy hit by a chimney and in intensive care. 5% of buildings in Christchurch CBD have sustained damage...some of it very bad.Morgan wrote:

The quake was a 7.1 magnitude (Richter) and focus was 10km deep and about 30m west of Christchurch. The nearest major fault would be the Hope which runs along the foot of the Alps west of Darfield.
I just talked to my family in Chch....My father has been evacuated from his nursing home in New Brighton, Sister is ok, brother has no power or internet and water supply is intermittent.
Nick...where exactly is your house? Sounds like youre out Brighton way if you're on sand.

Thanks for your concerns Lillian, I just talked to my family...all ok. The nursing home my Dad is in took some major damage and half the residents have been evacuated from their rooms into one of the homes communal TV rooms.

Roller is a pretty good term to use.....there are several types of shock waves associated with an earthquake. After the fastest compressional (or P) waves come the slower but far more damaging S waves....often manifesyed at surface by rolling ground waves.
Some photos here taken by a Geologist based out at Canterbury Uni.

Whoa, those images of liquefaction are scary. Looks like something you'd see in a mud pot at a hot spring.

Re: Christchurch quake; widespread luting
Yeah we are out at Queenspark Martin, classic liquifaction up the driveway & the reason the house has twisted/sunk as half the piles sunk into the liquid sand.Kaipoi seems the hardest hit, major roading is just covered in sand & sewerage, shops collapsed or broken. Past earthquakes have been the slow wave type, you feel abit dizzy and things swing around you, no major damage...but this was something else! Felt like someone had a hold of you by the shoulders and was jolting/shaking you back and forth, it was quite unerving as it just seemed to go on & on. Hopefully that was 'the big one' they have been predicting cos I don't want to go through that again!
I believe some of the roading locally is quite shagged (civil defence is advising us to stay at home to stop rubberneckers.....don't need to tell me twice!), saw one shot on the tele (looks like Avonside area) of a road that's cracked, one lip of the crack is a good 600mm higher than the other. Both power and water back on out our way but still most of the city without the latter & rural areas, they are predicting it could be days before any services are resumed.
Bob I do have my two Elsie's that could now possibly be kindling, Crying or Very sad One of my work mates/good friend who lives close to uni is going to have a look for me. Not really wanting to hear the possible outcome because I know there are some stacked shelves nearby. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Re: Christchurch quake; widespread luting
Thanks Sebastiaan & Luke, think the whole city is extremely lucky , there has been no loss of life & only 2 serious injuries. Not over just yet as aftershocks continue on which aren't as bad but still in the upper 4 range of the Richter scale. The boffins (Martin's lot) are thinking that instead of moving the usual few mm, the tectonic plates could have moved up to 5m in this episode, so no wonder it was a biggie.
Word from my mate is that the pair of Elsies made it through the ordeal unscathed so I'm a little happier now, but because the university has several tall buildings we aren't allowed back on campus for another week while they get the engineers to survey the buildings & give them a clean bill of health. So whilst I'll have the whole week off I won't be able to get on with my luthiery Crying or Very sad

So glad that yourself, your family, Martin's family, and even your guitars have made it through safely. I realize the title I gave to this post might have been a little inappropriate for what was such a potentially disastrous situation. I certainly didn't intend to make light of anybody's plight, and despite the lack of fatalities I'm sure there will be plenty of hardship to go round down there for quite a while.
I wouldn't worry too much about feeding your guitar building addiction for the next week as I'm sure you will be kept plenty busy and possibly even putting your engineering skills to good use. And if you have still have a lutherie itch to scratch you can keep us company here. I may even have to start posting real questions about Selmer building again shortly instead of fluff in the Anything Goes section Shocked
I'm a long way up north form you and I'm sure that you're probably covered for all your needs, but if anything pops into your head that I can help with just holler, e.g. fancy a holiday in the BOI while your house gets renovated?!? Wink

Thanks Morgan, appreciate the offer. I didn't think anything wrong with your title and even had a laugh at the same thought you had of a wandering minstrel picking his way delicately through the rubble whilst plucking his lute and singing.

Re: Christchurch quake; widespread luting
This is terrible news Nick
I was hoping the early stories were mostly the media sensationalism we have all come to know. I guess such cynicism is a direct result of the boy who cried wolf syndrome, its hard to believe anything much anymore but its now clear how serious this incident was for the folks of Christchurch.
Good news indeed that most had escaped injury. Hope recovery is swift and you can all get back to some normality very soon.
Cheers
Kim

Cheers Martin, fortunately our water went back on in the arvo but there are still areas around Chch that aren't so lucky. One of my work mates lives in Wainoni Rd (just across the bridge from your dad's home), not 5 minutes away from me & as far as I know they are still drinking the hot water cylinder dry but I told him to grab some drinking containers & grab some of ours if he gets sick of tepid drinking water. They are still advising not to flush the dunny or have a shower (I feel so yucky right now!) as they don'y know the full extent of the damage to the sewerage system but hopefully that's sorted out as I don't feel very 'human' at this stage.
Despite the "luxury" of personal hygene, things are not quite so bad today, aftershocks have died right down in frequency & duration but still occuring every hour or so. But now the weather's against us also with nor west gusts up to 130 kph predicted so if any buildings were close to falling yesterday they'll get blown over today! Shocked
About to go pick up my partner/girlfriend who lives across town, so it'll give me a chance to see firsthand what conditions are like in other areas.

Nick, I realize it might not be of much help right now, all things considered, but we keep a case of baby wipes for situations like this. Couple of years ago, we got hit by a nasty ice storm that took out power all over the Puget Sound Area (Seattle and the surrounding cities, towns and cross roads). It took a few days for the first areas to get power back, months (yes months) for the more remote areas. We were without for about 5 days. Warmed up baby wipes were almost heaven. I was so glad we had a wood stove we could cook on and heat the house with.
I use them now because they seem to clean me up better/quicker when I've been working on the truck with out the harsh chemicals.
