Enclosed Go Bar Deck

Post by woodrat » Wed Sep 23, 2009 10:54 pm

I have just completed a small 2.4m by 1.8m (8 foot by 6 foot ) room in one corner of my workshop. I did it so I could have the dehumidifier in there instead of in my room! I have constructed a bulkhead 900mm (3 feet) over the bench to make it a double dish go bar deck to be able to work on two tops or backs at once. It is so much easier to control the humidity in this smaller space, it drops to mid forty % quickly and will cost less to run as well. It is also an airlock between two parts of my workshop. I thought I would share some pics.

Looks to be a great little room that you could crank the tunes up in and not disturb the neighbors as well John.

Pretty cool idea. Any way you could make it a spray booth too? :)
I hope you don't mind, a bit off subject but do most of you all have your decks where you can't walk around it? Mine is located on my island bench so I can walk around the other side if I need too. I find it helps when cleaning the squeeze out.

With that many Go-bars there's bound to be some squeeze out.

Welcome to the forum Chris. Hope you've got a sense of humour, 'cause it comes in handy around here.

Hi Chris and welcome from the Wood rodent too! I have been using my little climate room/go bar enclosure now for a couple of weeks and I can say that I am glad that I spent the time (and money!) to build it as it is so easy to control the humidity and the humidifier does not fill up nearly as fast as with the larger space I used before. Although I cant walk around the other side to get to squeeze out I can see it through the windows, I have enough access all around to get it all. :D
I dont think that I will be able to get it to double as a spray booth though :(

Cheers

My go bar deck sits on a wheeled table so I can access it from all sides AND wheel it down to the pub with me.

:D <sigh>

John I like the windows and I wanted to install a window in my shop too so that I could tell when I was slacking off....

Here's my go-bar deck and apologies to those who have seen it before.

To me a go-bar deck is an integral part of how I build but I don't use it every day. So I wanted to get at it from all sides (mostly for ease of cleaning up squeeze-out) but I did not want the stinkin thing to dominate my shop and be centrally located.

So here it sits in it's corner location nicely out of the way.

Image

Notice the built-in task light. I don't know if it's me or what but I just can't seem to have enough light where ever I am working so task lighting in addition to over-head lights really helps.

Image

When I want to use the go-bar deck the Performax thickness sander wheels somewhere else for easy access and the go-bar deck slides out AND rotates 360 degrees for all-sides-access.

Image

It works because of the magic of television, well..., the magic of a television slide like what you find in cheap hotels that rent rooms by the hour....

Image

This slide has a 250 pound capacity which permits me to build dreadn*ughts too... :D

It works great and I would not change a thing. I wish that I could take credit for the idea but I can't. When discussing go-bar decks and all-sides-access on the OLF OLFer Dean Pmed me with the idea of using a television slide and I have been grateful ever since.

Mine is just a top added to my solera, when I need it. Goes up and comes down in minutes. Never takes up shop space, unless I'm gluing something.

Nice little space John. I don't really have to worry about humidity in Canberra. Most of the time it is perfect. I have something similar to you without the uprights which can get in the way and be a real pain. You would have easier access than some of the smaller decks with uprights I would think.

Mine is a divided shelf attached to the ceiling that goes out over a bench against the wall so I can get a 3 sides. My bars are on the rack there and I have heaps of storage above for bodies and other stuff.

Here's my Go bar deck/bench.
Cheers
Dom
