Headstock

Post by Blink123 » Tue Jan 24, 2023 2:16 pm

Just finished the books. Wow, that was intense. Going to start on a guitar from the plans.

Wondering if someone has the dimensions of this headstock from the book.

Which guitar are you making? An OM cutaway steel string or a neoclassical.

On all my Gore builds I left doing the headstock until last. I like to lay out string runs on the actual instrument and then get the position of the tuners spot on for a straight string pull. Once tuner positions are known I lay out the cutting lines for the headstock.

I have the older version of the books I think. Only have headstock template for steel string and slotted one for the nylon string and not the one from the design book

Will be building a classical guitar with the unslotted staright pull headstock from the design book.

After you run the strings passed the nut, do you then drill the tuner holes right underneath the strings (headstock) or do you offset the holes to the side to compensate for the width of the tuner?

I use perfection pegs planetary geared tuners (https://perfectionpegs.twofold.com.au/).

I fix a piece of thin cardboard over the headstock and mark out string runs on that. Tuner hole centre is offset by half diameter of the tuner post so string comes off inside of the tuner post and maintains a straight run to the backside of the nut. Once tuner location is marked out on the piece of cardboard I then glue that onto some perspex and that becomes my headplate template for routing.
