Newbie to the forum

Post by Davelson » Fri Apr 07, 2023 12:07 pm

Greetings all, just discovered this forum and already found some good info…

I am based in Melbourne for 4 months of the year - the rest of the year we travel northern Oz playing gigs and enjoying retirement.

After a few cigar box builds I enrolled in a guitar building course with Melbourne-based Jim Cargill and became interested in shell inlays after finishing a respectable ebony acoustic…. From there I purchased a small (900x600 bed) CNC machine custom made by a friend now in Adelaide who builds such things. Now 6-7 years later I am still creating custom shell inlays for others, and have built a few more guitars - one similar to the newish Acoustasonic but with midi/ acoustic/electric pickups, and a six string fretless bass….

Looking forward to sharing my Inlay/CNC/CAD experiences and learning from you all…

Attached a few pics of previous work…

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave
That inlay work is stunning. And your ebony guitar looks pretty sweet too.
How much time is invested in something as complex as that fingerboard, or the headstock plate? I can’t imagine even drawing those designs, let alone cutting them in shell and inlaying it. Tell us a bit more about the process, if you don’t mind.
Cheers
Mark
