ARW's So You Think You Can Dovetail comp.

Post by P Bill » Wed Jan 02, 2013 8:58 am

Hi fellas,
I'm shamelessly soliciting " likes " and " comments " for my entry, # 20, in The Australian Wood Review's " So You Think You Can Dovetail " comp.
I'm only going for the popular vote on facebook and a mag. subscription. There are some very fine entrys for the real 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the mag's.
comp. proper.
You can see my computer alcove under the loft. I built 99.9% of what you can see in the photo.

Some of those entries look to be jig & router cut to me, where's the competition in that?!
Nice work with the handrail e.t.c Bill, interesting looking place you have there :cl

Now, that's what I'd call a pterosaurtail! 8)

Thanks for the support fellas, seems to be working.

Nick hand v machine is a hot topic wherever you go especially with furniture.
The house is modelled on a suburban train station in Fairfield on Bris. south side.
I spent a lot of time at that station in the 80's.

Yep they look mostly machine cut to me.

Dovetails use to hold me in awe, until I bought an incra jig, now dovetails are childs play, they are so simple people start making really complicated dovetails

Example.

You can use the Incra Jig ??? You must be a savant !!

But seriously, in an exhibition or a comp. like this one, machine cut is a disadvantage to the maker. The judges usually look for the London pattern ( thin, thin pins ) or pins smaller than a router could cut. Hand cut dovetails in contempory work have been given sacred cow status. I've done a bit of repro and would over saw or over chop the odd ones to make it look real. This was usually work done by apprentices under the gun.
