Fret slot cutting tutorial ;-)

Post by charangohabsburg » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:24 pm

You say you are skilled and have a steady hand?
Have a close look how this jig works and you'll speed up your fret slot cutting using just a pretty simple low cost template!

The "tutorial sequence" starts right here at 8m43s.

Enjoy! ;)

Did I really see what I think I saw? Hand/eyeball fret slot cutting. Wow!

Hi Dennis,

It's not only eyeballed. In the very beginning of the sequence you see how he marks the fretboard with that template he is tapping on with his hands. In the next seconds you can see the triangular marks the template left on the edge of the fretboard, so each cut can be initiated at the exact position and has to be aligned with the mark on the other FB edge. The same template left pinhole marks for position the drill bit when drilling the holes for the fret markers.

I had to stop the video to see those marks.
That is pretty amazing technique but not unachievable for an average luthier, although most of us would do it a little bit slower...

I had to watch it again!

Thanks, Marcus. I was so gobsmacked by the hand fret slotting (I don't know what else to call it - like a hand-cut dovetail) that it completely obliterated seeing the marking template being used.

The first fretboard I slotted was laid-out using the older wooden slotted stick/template that LMI used to sell, and a 4H pencil. Then I attached the fretboard to an MDF slave board that just would barely slide through a shop-made miterbox. I carefully aligned the saw to each pencil mark by tapping the slave board this way and that to get it as precise as possible. I mention all this because it literally took me longer to align one fret slot than this master luthier took to slot the whole neck. Absolutely amazing.

Also learned a cool trick from you about positioning the start of a video where you want it. Thanks!
