Greg Smallman guitar

Post by Bruce McC » Fri Jan 06, 2012 1:34 pm

This Utube clip is a promo for Milos Karadaglic's CD "Milos The Guitar"
The CD liner notes acknowledge the guitar as a 2007 Greg Smallman.
Lovely music and an interesting bonus DVD, but unfortunately apart from
the reference in the liner notes, no other details about the guitar.

Thanks Bruce, I know Greg Smallman's guitars are known for their projection but they obviously also have good tonal balance judging by this clip (and others of his using the same axe), not that I wouldn't expect them to  But the 'knockers' of Mr Smallman's innovative work in the classical field often cite a thin tone to his guitars due to the use of non traditional 'composites' in their construction....sour grapes or snobbery I'd say.

Thanks for that Bruce...beautiful piece played on a beautiful instrument by a magnificent player.

If you wish to have a youtube vid display in a post as yours now does, you need to use the "youtube" button in the edit pane (located under B/ i / u buttons) 'and' you must delete all text in the url relating to search. i.e. everything including and from "&" in the address must be deleted so the URL becomes a direct link to the clip.

So to get your clip to display how it now does I simply deleted the text from the end of the URL that appears below in red..highlighted what was left, and then clicked on the "youtube" button. 8)

I think many of those people try to judge the sound of a guitar upon Youtube videos or even someone else's judgement etc. As nice as this guitar may sound on this YT video above, I am sure that in real life it sounds much better. I find it amazing how tolerant our sense of hearing actually is and how we are able to enjoy music even if it is coming out of some flimsy loudspeakers! :D 8)

On the other hand, without ever having enjoyed a life performance by a Smallman-guitar playing guitarist I guess that a substantially louder sounding guitar will always have another timbre than a "normal" guitar and I believe that one can not make it just louder "everything else staying the same".

Sometimes, when reading the critique of those non-lattice sectarians I imagine what would have happened if Torres would have limited himself to the sound of the Pre-Torres guitars... he certainly would not have made guitars we know today as "Torres guitar"!

I went and saw John Williams play at a little wine bar here in Canberra with John Etheridge a few years ago. We were close to the stage and could hear the actual un amped guitar. The guitar sounded fantastic, he played a range of stuff and some songs with JE, some beautiful classical pieces and some more contemporary world music. It sounded neither thin nor any other pejorative. Given the fierce reception given to ideas in Trevors book and by extension all Australian’s in some forums its not hard to believe that there are plenty of people who have never heard a smallman but are convinced it is the devils work.

I read a perfect example where some guy at a guitar festival in the US comes up to a stand of guitars, picks one up and plays it and declares it is one of the best sounding guitars he has played, what kind of bracing does it have? “Lattice braced similar to smallman”. Man puts guitar back, saying “too bad, I don’t like the sound of lattice braced guitars”. Enough said.

:lmao :lmao It's a bit like wine officianados Dom, who cares if it has the wrong bouquet, doesn't sit well on the palate or the grapes are a little young....if you like the taste, then drink the bloody stuff! A bit like our American friend there by the sound of it, blinded by science and what is supposedly 'proper' rather than following his ears.

@ Dom:

Nick,
That reminds me on a Wine Magazine* whose editor got sick of all those tests and especially the following discussions if these tests really would reflect the "facts". So he set up a new series of tests, called "The emptier the bottle..."**. No joke. He organises fine dinners with fine (similar) wines, but the bottles are in numbered sleeves. At the end of the dinner the emptiest bottle wins. Easy, huh?

Smallman guitars are amazing instruments. I own a 2001 with the adjustable neck feature. My Smallman is so easy to play. Very little effort is needed to create music on it. The dynamic palette is very broad. The volume is nice, but that isn't the main reason for the design IMO. It is the ease of playability. You play more relaxed because you don't have to dig in to fill a hall with sound. The carbon fiber fingerboards have an amazing feel to them. Smallman guitars are musical tools that make the job easier to do.

It's been about 8-9 years now that I've been building this style. It is just a brilliant design. I wish Greg would write more about his work and innovations.
