Guitar Makers Big day Out.

Post by ozwood » Fri Mar 18, 2011 10:23 pm

A mate and I who both make Guitars Took advantage of the show holiday in Newcastle , and headed to sydney on a tool , wood and other, Mission .

First stop Carbatec, our lucky day min 10% of everything, left with an armful each.
Next Mc Jing Tools the Aladins cave of shit's and Bit's They had some really interesting Planes in Stock , Looked Like Copies of the Old Stanley bedrock's, But The Machining and Blade Quality was Surprising really heavy , nice thick blade, a Little fettling and they would be tip top .Thinking of saving up some pennies and heading back to buy a few.
Next stop was Artist Guitars, they have Guitar stands for $ 10 and some pretty good hard Guitar cases for $79.00. the sort that normally sell for about $130.
We then Visited a Timber yard who specializes In Specialist timbers, Got a heap of neck wood , NG rosewood, QLD Maple, and Mahogany , Plus a Nice 300mm wide Plank Of Kauri we are Going to try as sound board material we reakon we can get about 14 Necks out of the Neck Timber , all nicely Quartered and about 6 tops out of the Kauri . Total $175 we were very happy.
Our Last stop was the best, My mate made arrangements to drop into Gilet Guitars , got the grand tour and spent some time chatting to Gerard and his Crew, left amazed at the quality and sound of his Instruments, Gerard was a more than happy to give us some pointers, The guy is amazing, made most of his own tooling like a Binding Machine out of what Looked like a Tyre bead breaker, had a listen to a few of his instruments , they Sparkle, very nice , all in all a top day.

Sounds fun. And Gerard is a terrific guy to have a chat with. He always stops buy when he's in Cairns on his once a year trip up north for a bit of R&R an fishing.
