SEX
This post actually has nothing to do with sex. Anything goes, right? Well, I want to ask how the ANZLF is supported. I know the staff must not get paid. I know the Forum software costs money, as do computers, servers, etc. Is there a sugar daddy (I guess this is the sex part) taking care of it all? Almost the first screen one sees at the MIMF is a request for money. (Not that I mind a request for money from a non profit org doing good work for a lot of people) It's just that I haven't been hit up here at ANZLF.
Cheers, Cactus

Bob sends "the boys" around to collect...... and they don't take plastic!
I'm not sure about how things are funded but I do know that Bob set the whole thing up,so he's your man when it comes to all things ANZLF (although there's probably a few others in the secret covenent that know as well). But you are right, it is a wonderful resource that is provided free for us plebs which is why I'm grateful & try to take an active part in it by sharing anything I know (which ain't much!).
"Jesus Loves You."
Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Are the others getting paid?
No one told me.
The server belongs to Bob, and the ANZLF world headquarters is located in a brick and mortar bunker in Geelong, Victoria. The server, and forum software are very popular and free platforms developed over a number of years by people around the world. Hardware and bandwidth costs are being born by Bob, who has not asked for anything from the membership.
We do not ask for money from our list of approved vendors. The only way to get on that list is to have a proven track record with supplying a quality product, great service, and easy to deal with. In short, being someone that we all feel confident in recommending to a newbie that doesn't know where to turn.
I know that the server is getting a little long in the tooth, and may need some upgrading. Whether Bob will be looking for some contributions to this cost in the future, I do not know.
In short, we do all this because we are a friendly bunch, who believe that information should be freely available. It's also a way to pool our collective buying power to get better deals on products that we all need, but usually need to be imported, with the associated high shipping costs.

I'm an admin/moderator here but don't get paid a cracker because I create more problems than I solve. But that does not stop me from checking my bank account regular for some kind of mods grease. It's sort of like when you walking past ur mail box in the evening. You know full well the postie has been that morning cause you already been fitted up with ur bills. You know beyond doubt that he wont be coming back again until tomorrow. But that won't stop you from lift'n that lid to take a look even though you 'know' nothing will be there.
As Allen explained so well, Bob provides all off his own bat. From what I understand there is no great monetary outlay but we must applaud his effort and kindness in setting this up and maintaining it for us.....The rest of us just do what we do to be part of this unique and generous community. Sharing what you can to be helpful and asking questions to trigger the learning is the only fee expected of our members cause there's no such thing as a free lunch. You hear'in that you lurkers

Cheers
Kim

non ANZ residents? Using sheep icons? Hey, that's Hesh!jeffhigh wrote:Yes Cactus at some stage you will be required to provide sexual services to the moderators and site owner.

Sex with a guy named "cactus"? Ouch! Run Hesh!!!
Well, if Bob ever hinted that he would appreciate donations to keep it going, I'd tear up a brick or two of gold from one of the many US streets that are paved with gold and send it over to Bob! Geez, I bet the postage on that would be high...
Michael, may I recommend that if you are a beginner, like me, without much lutherie knowledge to share yet, that our currency is our active participation, friendship, levity, and encouragement to those that do have experience to share. Hell, I even helped to start another forum for luthiers, and I still love to come over here and hang out with this lot. Some really remarkable talent here, no pretentiousness, and a group that loves to laugh. It's no wonder you're willing to donate to keep it going.

Jeff, that reminds me of something I have been meaning to share with you'all.

When your lutherie project is going poorly
and you need a helping hand
You can turn to your favorite lutherie forum
for help.
Just be prepared for what might happen
(This never happens at ANZLF by the way)

Cheers, Cactus
