Whats in a name

Post by ozziebluesman » Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:31 am

G'day everyone,

I have a question to pose to you all regard an idea I have for a guitar building handle?

Out my front door I have a view of The Pinnacles, a mountain outcrop which is part of the Hervery Ranges. It is a beautiful scene! Because my name Alan Hamley is a bit bland IMO I thought maybe Pinnacle Guitars.

What do you reckon? :D

Cheers

Alan

Thumbs up from me Alan, not only describes the scenery under which the axe was produced but could describe the quality of the build :)

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Every time you get a little bit of exposure, and they mention your name, that doesn't help someone find you as easily as naming your guitars Alan Hamley Guitars or similar.

Using you name adds that personal, intimate vibe. I get people call every day and when they ask who they are speaking to, or I tell them "just say you spoke to Perry when you come in" that get all excited because they spoke to the 'head guy'. People like that. Otherwise, they are 'just speaking to some dude at Pinnacle'...

I think your name is fine, in fact it has a ring to it. I had a lot of trouble deciding on a name because we all feel our own names aren't 'cool', or suitable. People have trouble pronouncing mine, and half the people cant spell it... Fact is, it doesnt matter what your name is, it's fine. Really, you'll be the only person that ever worries about it.

It was someone who said 'if you are proud enough to put your work out there, be proud enough to put your name on it' that really nailed it for me. And then when I thought about it, how many well respected brands are out there that AREN'T named after then original main builder/owner? How many are?

All of what Perry just said + business rule 101 from Dick Smith...put your name on it, make that your band and the business something to be proud of and that alone will open doors for you in ever venture you undertake in the future.

Naming your company after a geographical feature is dangerous..what if you move house??

And if your kids get involved in the business you could be "Hamley and Family" Guitars - you wouldnt want to miss out on that....... :D

but seriously, I agree, stay with your name, it already has some respect and you will start at the bottom again if you ditch it.

Thanks to you all for your comments.

I am very proud of my stringed instruments so I will be staying with my name.

I'm planning a small website soon so using my name is the best way for my site to be found easily on the internet.

Cheers

What if the geographical feature moves - now that really is dangerous.
