G'day

The program for Playmakers 2010 in Albany Western Australia has been announced. The themed instrument next February 12th - 14th will be 'The Resonator Guitar', although as you read on you'll see there will be much more on offer, with some very fine Players and Makers in the line-up.

Our very own Tim Spittle will also be presenting an enlightening session on Australian tonewoods on the Saturday .

Here are a few scans of the brochure that explains all:

FIL14325.JPG

CONCERTS

If you are wanting tickets then can I suggest you get in early, especially the Saturday night concert which in past years has been a sell-out. (Featured on stage in the pic above from the Playmakers 2009 Concert are Jim Conway, Andrew Winton and Azo Bell).

ACCOMMODATION

To search for medium-to-up-market accommodation in Albany click here.

For down-market accommodation I'm happy to again offer beds & plenty of floor space to all comers; simply PM if you want to take up the offer.

Forum members Bob C, Kim H, Allen Mc, Micheal C and TimS stayed here last February and we all had a pretty good time chewing the fat and jammin' late into the wee small hours (Bob & Kim's duet renditions of Pink Floyd classics are truly memorable!). I'll be MC'ing for Playmakers again over the weekend so will be coming & going, but feel completely free to camp out here for the duration.

PERTH TO ALBANY

Is about 420kms on a fairly good highway, allow for about a 5 hour drive. As TimS is coming down he may have a spare seat or three in the Mighty Mazda, plus you'd probably be treated to a Grand Tour of Tonewood Heaven - bring wallets. Kim also said he'd be back next year so may be able to offer you a lift.

If flushed with $$$ you might want to fly down on WA's regional airline, Skywest - for scheduling info click here.

Look forward to seeing some of you visit Albany - should be a hoot. Not sure if Becks are sponsoring the Opening Night, but do give East Augusta a miss.

John,

If the Albany Shire's noise abatement notice issued after my last visit has expired, i too would love to re-book my room to play at Madison Gardens if you will have me.

Cheers

Fly down with Skywest Airlines??? ROFL...no thanks. I dont like their flexible schedules......3 to 7 hour waits at Perth airport while your airline finds a plane that works is more than the hardiest traveller can tolerate.

Looks like an interesting line up and it's good to see Kristina Olsen and Peter Grayling still collaborating...............I did live sound for them locally back in the mid '90s..............both very nice people. 8)

Do we need to hire a skip for the empties, or will you have that issue sorted this time around John?

Thanks for the reminder, Allen

Albany is still catching up to the rest of the world ... there isn't a 'shopping cart' kind of service available for ticket sales, however the PIAF (Gt Southern) website has an email address for Bookings to Coordinator Rod Vervest, as well as the phone number for the Town Hall Box Office at this page. While there, click on THE GREAT SOUTHERN to learn more about what else is happening here in February, and you can also follow links to the Playmakers pages.

To go direct to the Box Office click here where tix can be ordered and paid for by credit card over the phone. WA has decided against daylight saving so we're 3 hours behind the east coast.

Allen, Bob & Kim - yours beds are formally booked! ... and yes, Waste Management for empties & cartons is under control!!

My ticket is booked for the concert. There is an e-commerce site for bookings, but it does take some digging to find it.

That's interesting, Allen. I thought the PIAF e-commerce facility wasn't set up for Gt Southern events and that the Box Office at the town hall was the only way to go. Do you pay for tix once you're here or is that already taken care of?

It's the same as last year, were I paid via credit card and had them mailed to me. Like I said, it was a bit difficult to find it, but I just kept on clicking on links and eventually came across the one that I wanted. Don't know if I could do it again though.

I definitely feel your pain, Martin. However, Skywest do a good thing and that's to support Playmakers and other Gt Southern Festival events every year by way of generous concessions on airfares for makers & performers.

Wish they'd offer as much support to mining and oil gas guys like me who make their Perth-Exmouth service profitable especially during the wet season when all the tourists have nicked off. Not good when they know a plane has a fault way before you rock up at Perth airport at 5am and then sit around the terminal for 7 hours while they find a working plane. Even worse for the guys coming off the rig who then miss connections to their home turf. Everytime their flight to Exmouth is more than 2 hours late it costs my client an extra $3000 to overnight me in Perth. Take into account the other 14 guys travelling with me then it soon adds up to a significant cost for the oil company. Skywest just dont seem to care..never any follow up on the reason for the delay and never an apology. All they give you is a lousy $8 food voucher which pays for a cup of coffee and half a croissant.

Regardless of their support of cultural events their main priority should be running on time and treating their paying passengers with a bit of respect.

Off topic post so Ill shut up now I've got it off my chest.

I recall a couple of years ago there was going to be a second West Australian regional airline start up that would have been in direct competition to Skywest i.e. force 'em to lift their game, but nothing came of it, at least in the Gt Southern.

Subjecting to poor souls along the east coast to my leather chaps will have to wait for another year John. Just a dash across the country and back via Qantas.

Howdy all i haven't as yet built a guitar but i do intend to and this site is already very useful and you fella's are a very helpful bunch from what i can see but i was just reading all this here and i know i am also going down to the playmakers festival in alabany as i am just south of perth <<< as the location thingy says but was just wondering if at some point while i'm down there i could catch up with ya's and just pick your brains a bit.
And its just nice to put face to internet post too! haha well see how ya go anyway.

Also John FM (john i presume?) my uncle and I. I think at this stage are planning on bringing his caravan down. Is there a caravan park near the main events or just somewhere we can dump ourselves for the weekend. we don't really need power as we will just be sleeping in it (passing out however you want to put it really ) But yeh just wanted to ask you about it.

Hiya Keegan
Am sure I can find a spot out the front to park the caravan, can even throw in an extension chord! The more the merrier, and there'll be plenty of merriment for sure. It'll be an open house here all weekend so feel free to come and go. Playmakers is sure to give you plenty of juice to get you started on that first build.

I'm at 4 Bromley Court, Lower King about 10 minutes from town towards Kalgan/Nanarup ... check this link ... the Albany CBD is to the south of the page. Probably easier if you just meet us all at the Opening Event on the Friday night for a couple of quiet ones and we'll kick on from there.

The venue all weekend for Playmakers is the Eclipse Building at the Albany Museum on the foreshore in town.

Send me a PM if you want any more info about anything I've missed here!

Cool sounds good john. Geez an extension cord! we'll be living the high life! far out! haha but seriously though, that sounds like a good plan i reckon.

now i finally understand Kims signature on here as well!

I'll confirm all this with you a bit closer to the date if thats ok john?
I'd say this is the go but i'll just check closer to the date.

Cheers John.

Goodo Keegan. PM me when you've got travel plans sorted. Re the Saturday Night concert - tickets are limited to about 120 people and it's always a sell-out so best get in early (see above scans for booking info number) if you're planning on going. Cheers
