Aussie In My Neighborhood

I have a new neighbor and some of the guys who are building the homes in these parts tell me that he is from Australia. In addition this fellow and his wife are also flying the Australian flag in front of their new home.

I want to go over there and welcome these folks and I am wondering if my friends here can give me any tips of how to make a good impression and also let me know things that probably would not be a good idea to say or do...

So let's hear from you - any tips of what to say and what not to say?

Take over a plate of Lamingtons.

If you take them a beer, whatever you do don't take Fosters. No one drinks it here. It's generally regarded as wee-wee.

If they are from an Aussie Rules football state, (WA, SA, TAS, QLD) you can always make disparaging remarks about the Collingwood Football Club, because everyone hates Collingwood.

If you luck out and they are Collingwood supporters you'll probably get beaten up as Collingwood supporters are generally bogans.

If they are from a Rugby State (NSW or Queensland) tell them you are a big John Hopoate fan. That'll generally get the thumbs up.

Hesh ... while you're waiting for your sponge cake to rise you could jump online and brush up on How to Use Australian Slang Like a Local.

You'll also find an excellent Australian Slang Dictionary here.

A good way to break the ice is by asking an Aussie if the Canning Stock Route is an annual event.

That'll work along with saying something along the lines of shrimps and barbies, cos they wouldn't have heard that one before.
