Well it's official!

New Zealand is now the official home of cuckoo's (or la la's).
Taken from the New Zealand Herald:

Artists have taken as a slap in the face a piece of "art" which won a Waikato award ahead of their entries without its creator having touched or seen it.

The piece, Collateral, which won the Waikato National Contemporary Art Award, was entered by Berlin-based Dane Mitchell, who won $15,000 for his effort - or lack of.

Mitchell wrote a message to Waikato Museum art gallery staff asking them to collect the discarded wrapping of other entries and tip it on the floor. That was his entry, the Waikato Times reported.

Another entrant, Mark Hayes, said he spent 26 hours "cutting, welding and grinding"' for his Domestic Violence is Not Okay sculpture, but probably should not have bothered.

"Contemporary art needs to say something to you and make you think. I am sorry but I just cannot see the 'clever' and 'cheeky' in the winning sculpture," he said. "Is someone trying to make Trust Waikato look like a joke?"

Other local artists Collette Fergus and Bruce McLachlan said the winning entry was "the worst yet".

"A pile of rubbish that wasn't even created by this guy is worth $15,000?" Fergus asked.

She said it was a "sad mockery of us all and an embarrassment to the arts community".

Museum director Kate Vusoniwailala defended the decision of the judge, Charlotte Huddleston.

It had achieved an objective of getting a lot of people talking about the awards, she said.

"There will always be people who love things and those who hate them. The bottom line is we always ensure the judge we select has an excellent reputation."

And a video link (which I hope works offshore!) http://www.3news.co.nz/Art-or-rubbish-/ ... fault.aspx

Seem's you can get away with any old rubbish if you stick the label of "Contemporary Art" on it   So anybody want to win 15 grand? just smack a hole (another one) in an old Japanese guitar & bring it to NZ!

You know Nick, I read this and had about the same reaction as you and probably most everyone else, (except for the guy that carted off the loot). Now I have a background in contemporary art, pure studio fine art in college, didn't want to corrupt myself with commercial art or teaching, or anything else you could actually make a living at. So basically I dedicated my life to art, and have a pretty good appreciation for the fringe, cutting edge, etc. as well as the more traditional. I listened to some of the news interview with the judge and director etc. where they mentioned that all the artist's names that entered are in the rubbish pile etc., had enough about the artist's concept and turned it off. Then later it kept coming back to me and I realize that maybe it's not such a bad concept after all. All those artists that worked so hard on their pieces and have no doubt dedicated large parts of their lives to the pursuit of art, find as their reward their efforts dumped on the rubbish heap.

As I look back on it, other than personal satisfaction, that's about the same reward that I was given. So maybe his piece is indeed spot on! Welcome to the art world. :D

Now I just live back in the woods and attempt to make some wooden boxes with strings that sing.
